Are rogues really bad at soloing PVE (without overgearing the target)?

Assassination is very easy leveling

In General

When soloing very challenging enemies (high level world rares, etc), the player generally cannot win if they are unable to kill the target by the time their major cooldowns are all spent. Most classes are actually like that, as even hybrid healers run out of mana at some point. Healers (ironically), Tanks, and “Pet Classes” will always have the easiest time soloing, even if some take considerably longer.

Rogues Specifically

If the Rogue is able to stun and/or slow the target, you can usually buy yourself enough time to ensure your victory. In the event you are facing an opponent that you cannot CC and slow (and they otherwise deal an overwhelming amount of unavoidable targeted damage that you cannot reduce via “Feint”), you probably cannot win solo. Non-tanks generally can’t do this either.

Best Soloers?

What makes a class good at soloing? General points are:

  1. Tanky, or some mechanism that allows them to frequently mitigate high damage over long periods of time. Technically, “Feint” qualifies for this and makes certain enemies significantly easier for Rogues to handle than other classes.
  2. Self-sustain. Healers take the longest, but they’re generally “safe”, with Mistweaver (Fistweaving) being a notable winner when it comes to soloing content. Enhancement Shaman fairs well too. Warriors have a boatload of Self-sustain as well without sacrificing too much damage in the process.
  3. Pet with “taunt”. Hunters have a much easier time than Warlocks (Feign Death, Mend Pet not requiring a channel, etc). Pets can be great if they don’t die too quickly, but many more challenging mobs purposefully have mechanics that cause them to murder pets very quickly, so you’d be better off attempting to tank the mob yourself on a DPS Warrior, Ret Pally, or something similar.
  4. Interrupts, Dispels, and Soothes. Certain very difficult mobs are made 1000% easier if you have the right “buff removal” or cast cancellation tools. Prot Paladins have the most interrupts of anyone due to Avenger Shield’s mechanics, so they’re traditionally the best soloer in the game. Hunters are the only class which has access to both a dispel and “soothe” (Tranquilizing Shot is WoW’s original “Soothe” ability originally acquired via an ability tome in vanilla Molten Core) along with an interrupt. Shaman, Monk, Demon Hunter, and other have access to an interrupt plus a dispel or soothe.
  5. Crowd Control, stuns, etc. If the mob can be CC’d, it can be soloed by any class. Period. Some classes have an easier time inducing CC than others. Rogues are particularly good at this, even without dipping back into stealth mid-encounter (which often resets the encounter). Long-form CC can help prevent issues with adds associated with or near the target mob.

Best Soloers:

  • TANK – Protection Paladin
  • DPS – Beastmastery Hunter
  • HEALER – Mistweaver Monk

With that said, you’ll likely never have more fun soloing than when playing a Rogue. They offer a uniqueness in your gameplay that other classes simply can’t match.

I’m surprised you didn’t rank BDK as the best tank soloer. I have one at 80 with just average gear and I feel that nothing can outdamage the Death Strikes, unless it’s something meant for a raid. I don’t play Paladin, so I’m not sure how it is in practice, though.

Of the healers I have (Disc, MW, Resto), Disc is my favorite one to solo Delves, not only because of Fade constantly keeping you safe(ish), but Dominate Mind is a huge boon, although it can become annoying to upkeep. I actually didn’t try MW a lot in 80’s solo content, so I might see how it goes.

Kind of offtopic to the OP, but the reason why I leveled a rogue was to get better against them in PVP. I now understand a lot of how they operate, and I thought I could even play one seriously, but I found out, through all of those days of going SS/BGs that Rogue just isn’t for me.

The class is extremely powerful, but that comes in an expensive price of awareness, both to the timing of your abilities but also spatial awareness. It’s kind of unforgiving to mistakes (at the expense of your survival), so I think. I’m definely able to push it, but is just too stressful for my tastes, and that’s coming from someone who plays Rdruid is SS lol.

With current tuning, paladin can last just as long as a BDK but they do more damage.

I can’t really speak to the pre-60 experience personally (leveled everything up before level crunches), but 70-80 this expansion was a breeze.

Gotta agree. Doing solo content on my Rogue is the most fun I’ve had in WoW in a long time. It’s certainly not easier than my DK, but it’s more interesting and engaging.
