Are rogue good in classic WPVP and PvP in general?

Thinking maybe I’ll just make a rogue, alchemy/herb and eventually drop herb for engineering?

How are rogues in PvP without cloak of shadows? Will I hate life? Are alchemy/herb good till I get to 60 then dropping herb? Mainly thinking of buffs to help level and free action potions for world PvP

Thanks

restorative potions are the classic cloak of shadows.

you can get a pseudo cloak of shadows if you roll dwarf from stoneform (Bleed, Poison, and Disease ) that will allow you a vanish against another rogue or warrior!

the engineering reflectors kind of a pre-cloak but only against specific schools of magic

anyway i was kind of wanting to roll a rogue too and do exactly the same with the professions! making an alt to mine and herb though I heard rogues have a lot of bugs currently. poisons and vanish seem temperamental

I am herb/alch, though it isn’t actually needed. Pick pocketing, you get all the health pots and blinding powder you need.

I can’t speak for 60, but it has definite ups and downs. If I have no cooldowns up and a frost mage attacks, I’m screwed. Even against one several levels lower sometimes.

That said, these cooldowns are 3.5 min with talents, so it’s usually easy to work around. With CDs up, I feel unstoppable sometimes. The classes that DoT are oddly enough the easier of the caster classes to beat (as a forsaken rogue, anyway). Those are the ones I was worried about due to the lack of clock of shadows.

(Not a rogue outside of classic and only 48, so my knowledge is limited. But I WPvP a ton)

Short answer is yes, but as with anything, the class isn’t for everyone. If you think or know you know it though, then go for it. It IS good, particularly in a 1v1 scenario.

Why would you drop Herbalism at 60 if you plan to keep Alchemy? What would you replace it with? IDK that seems silly to me, but maybe I’m just not getting your reasoning. Engi would make sense; but then you’d need to get ore somewhere.

Rogues are good but you need to play the class pretty well. It probably has the widest array of tools in its kit, but you need to use it correctly. I think the patch we’re playing in isn’t the same as the old World of Roguecraft machinima, though, so rogues aren’t as good? I think?

Playing on a PVP realm, I don’t think there’s ever been a time in WoW’s history that rogue hasn’t been a good pick. Not always the best, but in the open world with no rules, etc. it just has so many things it can do. I stress using its toolkit correctly only because a lot of their cooldowns are way longer in vanilla than they are in retail (5 minutes!) but when you consider half the classes don’t even have mobility, defensive, or CC at their disposal, you’re in a pretty good spot!

If you have solid awareness and can keep yourself from being caught with your pants down, then you should have a fun experience. Being able to stealth and choose your battles is a lot of fun! Even for PVE!

So are you finding that you do quite well in WPvP?
I was planning on being undead as well for WOTF.
Pots I’d be doing alchemy for was more agility, trollsblood, free action, etc. Not so much for healing pots.

Edit:
What’s this restorative potion that is like cloak of shadows?

Restorative Potion
Item Level 42

Requires Level 32
Use: [Removes 1 magic, curse, poison or disease effect on you every 5 seconds for 30 seconds.] (2 Min Cooldown)

Max Stack: 5

Sell Price: 2

are you dead set on horde? because stoneform can break blind, its actually amazing in pvp but most alliance are busy playing nelf or humans complaining alliance don’t have good racials

That’s amazing!

I would be dropping herb for engineering so that I have grenades and just buying the herbs and ore I need with gold from farming.

@elack. Yes I’m dead set on horde because my RL friends are horde. :stuck_out_tongue: otherwise I’d be a pally

Generally, I’d say I do pretty well in WPvP. If I attack first, chances are that I’ll win. If I don’t attack first, that’s when it’s CD dependent.

I had a ret pally 2 levels higher attack me while questing the other day. He almost killed me in the stunlock alone. Fortunately, vanish was available, stealthed up, healed, destroyed him… repeatedly. I am combat spec might I add, so not really set up for PvP at all. He dropped incredibly fast…this was not skill, just the class. Such high single target dps.

If a mage snares you, break with sprint. Lock/priest fear, wotf. Another rogue or druid, rupture him. When a pally bubbles, run 20 feet, bandage up, and /laugh…then stealth up and stun him again. Low on health? Gouge or blind, bandage. What I like about rogue is that there is an answer for everything. Definitely bandage dependent though, which I don’t mind at all. Warriors are the biggest challenge for me…especially when they charge first and dot me up.

I’m sure nobody would want this comparison, but I’ll say it shamelessly: this feels like the equivalent to a DH in retail. It’s a simple rotation… just requires a ton of patience and proper timing of skills. IE don’t do what I do sometimes…waste a sprint to break snare, then get snared again right after lol.

With gear at 60, I imagine a PvP spec will be required. Though I imagine you’ll go with one since that is your main focus… I’ll have to figure the balance out :stuck_out_tongue:

Also if you’re interested in herb/alch, it’s a great choice IMO. Not just to make your own pots–I had the gold for my mount before 40 (between that and a few SM pick pocketing runs).

Edit: Just to add, stealth feels super weak compared to in retail–especially at first. Without putting points into Master of Deception, everyone seems to see through it…from like 30 yards away. Once you get stealth rank 2, this is noticeably less of a problem. Do not ever expect, as a low level, to be able to hide from a 60 using it… especially humans. They’ll just see standing there shaking. I generally stealth in a bush when I can.

good gankers but whats funny is i have been ganked by more hunters and mages then rogues…lol.

That’s fair! I think it would make more sense to go Mining/Engineering and just buy your potions outright, but that’s assuming herbs (even high level and rarer ones) aren’t too expensive.

True. But I would think alchemy is more useful on the road to 60 than engineering is… even if it’s only by a fraction. I have engineering on my warrior and honestly all I use it for is the goggles right now.

In original classic I mained an Orc Rogue. The 33% additional stun resist is amazing and a game changer for rogue vs rogue fights. But there really isn’t a bad race for rogues. In WPvP, being able to choose your fights or get out of a fight is just the start of awesome pvpness. Lots of tools in your toolkit, means that there is always something new you can learn. Also, ninja capping lumberyard, using your parachute cloak to go ninja blacksmith, then doing it again to ninja the mine in an AB map just never gets old. There is more to engineering than just grenades. Enjoy the rush of being a rogue.
