Are old world professions even worth leveling up?

Hey there, coming back to the game after a 2+ year break. Messed around in classic a bit but tbh I fell out pretty hard as there’s nothing to do but raid log, so here I am back in retail.

It feels like a completely different game from late Legion/ early BFA so I’m slowly relearning everything. I decided to level new toons on a new server in order to relearn the game properly.

I usually like having professions on all my toons it’s just an old habit, but tbh professions feel kinda pointless now especially because I’m leveling super fast via dungeon spams in between questing.

I’m leveling all my toons in the Cataclysm chrome timeline, and I see that I can’t even access some of these crafted stuff til 30 or so. So it begs the question, is it even worth it at this point, or should I just focus on leveling to max level rn while buffs are active and pick up only DF professions when xpac drops?

Unless you just really want old recipes for transmog, or certain profession abilities like Jeeves for engineeers or special glyphs for scribes, imo it is not worth doing previous expansion profession leveling. And for some expansions, it is almost impossible to do — looking at you, BFA!

I used to level every profession expansion even when I rolled a new alt, but I stopped doing that because it just is not worth the time sink for many of them. Now when I roll a new alt or change professions on an old one, I only level up the current expansion profession stuff.

Unless you’re a collector or completionist, not really. You could try getting into the transmog or mount markets, but depending on your server, they can be really slow and/or not worth the time.

RIP old world professions pointless now.

There’s still a bit of money to be had in selling mats; old world ore (especially complex bars like Arcanite) and Primal (BC) elements are still relatively expensive compared to current mats; Eternium Ore is 30g each and Fel Iron is 18g each. Far better than the silvers that current ores will go for once the market is inundated and the early-expac rush is over.

Not really pointless but just “mostly” pointless. People still begs for Jeeves and that is a 15 years old recipe requiring 16 years old expansion to learn.

Most of the older professions and recipes aren’t really worth if you’re trying to make money off old toys, pets, mounts, or xmog. Most people would have it already. But if you want to have some fun on the side, leveling professions and trying for complete recipe book could be part of the fun.

PS

what are you talking about?

Draenor profession made gear requires level 50 to use and the stats are like item level 48 with 8 armor +3 Sta +4 str.
The mobs are dropping item level 130 no level requirement 65 armor +15 sta and +10 str.

The powers that be buffed the zone levels and mob dropped gear but have not done anything with profession made gear yet.

Why I said RIP profession made gear.
