Yes. They’re definitely self aware. A little belligerent at times but definitely sentient.
They just don’t speak a language we can understand.

Pretty sure they aren’t beasts.

As others have said, they are sentient, they have speech, use tools, make homes, give quests, and are demon hunters (not joking, actually in-game currently since Legion)

Actually that’s not quite true. It’s not a choice for them, it’s a question — a question whose answer is almost invariably YES.

Ironically their language, Nerglish, is basically Common for underwater races.
There’s cases of above-water people learning it too. Alextrasza seems to be at least moderately fluent.

Yes, Murlocs have demonstrated all three at various points in time.
Tell that to the various Murlocs the player quests for over multiple expansions, including the entire village of them in Wrath with multiple murloc quest givers.
Do note that I said “almost always.”
It’s not their fault they are usually always minding their own business on a beach somewhere and we keep stomping over their lawn and trying to kill them, I’d be angry too.

I did say usually, there are occasions of them being out of their own areas with their homes and such, but that is a low amount of the time compared to the majority they are hanging out among their homes on a beach or lake and we come to kill them or steal their things
