Are mmos a dying breed of games?

They’re not completely worthless, but the comparisons only make sense within one genre, not across genres. Some genres just have a higher % of viewers to players. You can’t say anything about MMO popularity based on views only, you can only say one MMO is more or less popular than another based on views.

I’ve got a pretty dim view of most Youtube content creators but I’ll make an exception for Josh. He actually makes well-done videos and isn’t just sitting there being fake-hysterical for clicks like so many others.

Plus he’s got an amazing mug collection.

You can’t even say that…

I don’t think the MMORPG genre is dying. But MMORPG’s, like every other genre, have peaks and valleys of popularity.

I do, however, think that the general gaming landscape is changing in a way that is not necessarily a good environment for MMORPG’s in general. It won’t kill the genre but it won’t necessarily help it, either.

MMORPG’s existed for years before WoW but they were somewhat of a niche genre at the time. WoW was massively popular because it managed to break through to the masses in a way that no MMORPG before it was able to.

But the things that made WoW so popular are no longer the new novel experiences they were at the time. For the MMORPG to rise again in popularity to where it was back in the 2005-2010 timeframe, a new MMO will have to come along that offers up something truly novel again. I don’t know what game that will be, or what that novelty will be, but none of the current crop has it.

MMOs are only around 10% of the market share now. So yes: it’s a genre that’s mostly run its course. The vast majority of MMORPGs (90%) have already flopped.

Also, Twitch views is a poor way to rate the health of an MMORPG. Financial reports and player numbers is what determines a games health & profitability. WoW is a multi-billion yearly franchise and makes more money than the other top 5 MMORPGs combined.

I know, I can’t believe it either. And professional sports is a multi-trillion dollar industry…boggles the mind

A good game doesn’t have to have market share or tons of Twitch viewers to be a good game. There are plenty of awesome games out there that aren’t super uber duper popular that people love.
