Are hunters good at 1v1?

In terms of leveling world pvp and end game how do they fare against most classes?

Pretty much the fastest class for leveling but they’re certainly mortal when it comes to PvP and is largely reliant on you keeping at a good range. I’m no expert on the matter though.
Endgame raid value seems to be mainly for utility purposes from what I’ve seen since their DPS is partly lacking - Tranquilizing Shot is a very useful ability to have in your raid.

In the early levels (probs 1-30) you are incredibly strong, since most melee classes wont have slows/gap closers to get on top of you. Your pet also deals significant damage and applies constant pressure when facing casters making those match-ups pretty good too. Probably things like warlock will give you some trouble as they are very tanky and they only need instant cast dots to deal significant damage. Good frost mages can also be a problem if they can get into your dead zone. Lastly, druids can be a bit tricky as they are not too gear dependent, combined with their shape shifting to get out of slows/roots (and hibernate for your pet) and they can be a real pain.

Late game they are still pretty strong in 1v1 situations but other classes burst gets pretty punishing at later levels, meaning they only need to be on top of you for a few seconds to remove half your health pool. Essentially you will get punished for mistakes much more severely.

Early on hunters destroy everything because their damage is insanely high while their pets also hurt nearly as hard as a warrior of that level would. Your pet scales with level so it does the same damage whether you are a fresh 60 or in full T3 (aside from the 50AP it gets from the T3 bonus). Only mages are somewhat of an issue because they can deadzone you. Classes start being a pain around lvl 35-40 when they get their bottom talents and start having their full kit to deal with you.

In endgame pvp hunters are still very strong but will have some poor matchups. Warriors/Paladins can be kited forever. Spriests/locks will just dot you then kill you. Warlocks especially are near impossible to beat. Mages have the advantage because they can nova into a shatter for over half your health bar. 2x Ice Blocks is a complete pain as well. Rogues with prep will stomp you. 2x blinds, 2x vanishes, 2x everything. If they don’t have engineering/skull to counter your traps, you can manage. If they do, you are screwed. Druids are weird. Ferals will stand no chance against you but geared Balance druids can literally spam moonfire and kill you in under 10 seconds. Shamans can kill you in two spells, nuff said.

At low levels, hunters are amazing. Probably one of the best things to play by a mile.

At max level though, they’re terrifying to try to deal with as a melee since you’ve got so little options to get them in Vanilla. Other ranged will eat you though. Warlocks especially. Hell warlocks kill just about everything at that level 1v1 so just be careful.

Hunters are gods at soloing pve.

Hunters can take almost any class in pvp if (and this is a big if) they see them first.

Hunters in raids/groups… a good hunter is a huge asset… but no one will asssume you’re good.

Wait, what?

Pop a free action potion to counter frost trap, and the hunter has no way of keeping you out of melee thanks to dash, feral charge, and feline swiftness.

I had a huge problem w/ feral druids as a hunter in vanilla. bear form, and shifting out of wing clip/frost trap

Also depends on your anticipation of 1v1 based on the class you face and making some good keybinds/macros.

Fact is you’ll have a couple classes you straight up won’t be able to kill without some insane crits. Shadow Priests, and some druids come to mind. If Mages blink to close distance on you and you haven’t spec’d into scatter shot then you’re going to have a serious problem.

Remember, it’s easy to play a hunter. But it’s also really easy to play a hunter badly.

I don’t feel like going into end level pvp because I could write a book about it and noone would read it.

But, I would honestly say BM hunters are THE best 1v1 class throughout all of leveling. I honest to god do not think they lose to anyone as long as they semi play correctly. Early levels your pet does so much damage to everyone and they don’t have much gap closers that if you get the jump on someone you can actually just send your pet in and run away.

Once you get BW it’s over… You actually can pop it and just /dance.

Hunters fair rather well against most classes due to their ability to hold others at range and use thier pet and traps to control the fight, depending on talents.

After 60 progression, they tend to fall off the dps scale due to how gear is organized and how well other classes boost significantly with gear, so it becomes a lot harder.

rock paper scissors

If you need to pop a FAP to win a matchup then that matchup isn’t favorable for you. What kind of hunter even pops frost trap against a feral? If the druid is in cat then it’s a free scatter–>trap–>aimed shot/multi and if the druid is camping in bear then you just scare beast and you either bait a swap out of bear or successfully fear them.

Balance/Resto hybrids were a much bigger pain for me.

They are good at 1v1, but some classes just shut them down if you dont get the jump on them. It all comes down to how well you can kite, when I first learned to kite in vanilla, my old guild leader pretty much forced me to solo kite a mob that was 5 levels above me, so I would learn.

Why are you even theorycrafting for?

If you pop consumables and you win, who cares? Does that mean every encounter an engineer has is a bad matchup?

It depends on the level of the players, skill, positioning, tactics, and who got the opening shot.

“But meh huntard ken liek do dis rotation and for the winz”

If your out grinding you should have half you stuff or more on cool down cycles and you’re sitting at half mana or less.

Sitting there waiting to gank someone is totally different.

You do realize popping a FAP doesn’t stop the druid from getting trapped or scared right?

Also let me know when you find a hunter that uses its CC abilities on cooldown when grinding stuff.

Hunters are stupid strong at pvp 1v1. especially while leveling.

If you go beast master your pet can solo some classes and if you can kite well they cant touch you.
If you are marksman you can get talents to increase your range so you have a greater range than most casters. So you can kite casters while your pet beats on them.

It’s not even fair.

I loved using Scare Beast when a Druid switched forms. I would passive my pet, Scare Beast, drop a freezing trap on my path and ride off into the sunset while Druid would rage at my swiftly fading backside.

Yea, I love my Hunters.

Dang…you guys are making me want to play a hunter against my better judgement! I’m looking to raid and not sure if it’s easy to get into raids. Sorry, off topic I know.

I mean hunters don’t have any issue getting into raids. Min/max guilds will take 2-3 and casual guilds will take what they can get.
