I’m not going to do the googling so you can just go ahead and not believe me if you want, but around the time they were announced people did some pretty funny write ups of how they were basically a version of a somewhat prolific section of deviant art. Lets just say from what I saw I think Blizzard went fishing in the wrong pond for most people’s tastes. 
(But if you like them then just enjoy them. Someone should.)
