Are Add-Ons still allowed?

This may come as a stupid question, but one can never be too careful. I suspect that Press the Advantage with Face Palm doesn’t work as intended, and attempting to track it through hundreds of lines of combat logs is impractical. Thank you.

Addons are fine. However I have noticed that Touch of death often decides to simply not work since the latest patch.

Yes, Add-ons are still allowed for now. Sometime in the near future, any add-on that relies on pulling combat data live will be blocked from doing so. The reason given being that the devs are tired of the arms race between having content “trivialized” by addons, and having to increase difficulty to match it. If you rely heavily on add-ons, it may be good to start slowly easing yourself off their use outside of add-ons absolutely required to join groups (DBMs, Weakauras, etc.)

I blame our add-on problem on Blizzards laziness when it came to not updating the UI for… what? 20 years?

It is insane it was allowed to go this long with no way to properly track your own class buffs.

Addons are fine. They are optional and will remain a part of the game.

If Blizz does not like a particular addon, they will ban them and make it unusable. This would include the malicious ones that rarely happen anymore.

Awesome, thank all of you.

Since the addon API is something explicitly provided and supported by blizzard, anything that runs in that sandbox is fine (though if it’s sending chat messages, you’re responsible for the content of those messages).

If they don’t like something an addon’s doing, they’ll just break it (make it so that doesn’t work anymore).

Source? I cannot find anything officially announced on this.

From the latest video with Ion, they actually have a different stance. While they don’t make encounters based upon addons, they see the need for them and are also making the base game give more audio and visual tells to help minimize the need for the addons. Nothing about them actively trying to remove something that’s been around for 20 years.

I can’t imagine they would. There’s who knows how many hundreds of add-ons with various purposes that thousands of people probably use.

Some would be silly to ban or remove, like the add-on that enlarges quest text for those of us with bad eyesight.

I just can’t see them doing it. There’s too much quality of life to be lost unless they really start putting in the man hours to replace it all.

Doesn’t exist. Combt Addons are fine and will be fine for quite some time; they won’t disable them until comparable functioning base UI features in the game, so definitely not anytime in “the near future”

They already said it was only combat addons that they may eventually move away from, everything else is fine.

since there’s an “addons” button in the game’s menu i’m going to assume they are allowed

Most add-ons are completely fine. Sometimes an add-on breaks the add-on policy, and Blizzard will take action to break it so that it can’t function. But they haven’t done that in a while. So you should be fine to download the ones you need.

so thats whats happening. I wondered what was up with ToD

That isn’t what the interview said.

What it did say is that once they get to a point where they feel in game options and encounter design reach a point where people don’t feel forced to use addons, they might have to limit some functionality of a few.

That is not any time soon. And it isn’t everything, nor is it set in stone that they’d absolutely do it.

so. on one paw, they want the content to not be trivialized by addons.
on the other, they give you the ability to push 1 button to trivialize the actions needed to be taken in the content.

at least this is a good sign for controller support and maybe Xbox support in the future. :robot:

eh…Ive watched a lot of videos on the one key…it only runs a real basic ‘rotation’ and leaves out quite a few CDs, doesnt do mechanics for you, doesnt heal you, etc, etc…its not gonna be used by any player who really cares about DPS and playing the game.

It doesn’t trivialize the actions. It puts the dps rotation on one key. You still have to press it with each ability and it has a GCD.

If WoW is removing Addons they’ll need to make a game that doesn’t need them.

WoW cannot run on it’s own steam, most players have to use 3rd party help.

That’s the reality right now.

i think a whole lot more people will be using it on all skill levels of play.

using 1 button doesnt prevent you from pushing other buttons, which means those can be augmented and there will still be a power difference between two characters with the same gear both using 1 button for rotation. just a few other buttons thrown in as needed. a GCD debuff isnt going to prevent people from min maxing within that limitation.

i kinda want to see if someone can use it to out perform others with it.
its existence alone is going to drive content creators to the “challenge”

Its only the ones that trivialize mechanics/boss combat stuff from what the video shows.
if it doesnt do that, its not likely being affected at all.
The video mentions weak auras quite a few times by name, and based on what is said, its pretty obvious that addon is on their list.

But thats exactly what theyre saying…remove weakauras from the equation, then make the game challenging for us to play without them, but doable.
