Are Add-ons Degenerate?

100%

my custom weakaura graphics are totally degenerate.

I mean CHEATING! my custom graphics are cheating. Yes, 100%.

I was referencing Super Mario Brothers (1985) for wider recognition by a 30-40 year old audience.

While mods are certainly allowed in WoW… their definitely cheating.
Lebron James flopping on his back every time someone gets even a little close and pretending he’s been struck most definitely gets him a lot of free throws… but he’s cheating when he does it.

no, they’re not

you don’t define what cheating is in blizzard’s games. blizzard does. and they built the game intentionally to allow mods.

Yes.

The game works with them but it also worked better without them.

I didn’t think so… but then I’ve seen groups spend more time trying to find the right WA than just deal with a mechanic the normal way (being observant and reacting appropriately).

Bosses all have so many telegraphs like voice lines but now you have players that won’t do anything unless 15 airhorns are going off at once.

I love addons and all my WAs but I can’t deny that I’ve seen a decline in my teammates observance all around, players are tunnel visioning harder than ever now.

I don’t use addons really. Never felt the need for it. But when i made some friend to do raiding their raid leader insisted that i had to get DBM or forget to join their run. well i did and beside going deaf and annoyed with the sound and yelling, don’t really felt a need for it beside for first run in normal. But at this stage i ran castle nathria so often in lfr and normal i don’t need that addon, especially when most mechanic are easy to spot if you pay minimal attention to what the boss are doing anyway.

Though if i was raiding heroic or mythic or doing high mythic keys more often than once every blue moon, i may use it since its still probably help despite the annoyance it bring me.

I know, i’m just saying the design you described as cheating is very similar to the games from 7th and 8th gen consoles. One example comes to mind is Dead Rising 3 just throwing Icons and Sound cues so noticeable that you’re pretty much seeing icons of something gonna explode and hearing that “Free quicktime event on the Boss!” sound for 90% of the game.

While annoying and immersion breaking for some, especially since more and more people are playing on HD screens, half of being close up to that the screen and possibly have headphones, nobody has ever complained about that being cheating.

…Except they are not. I mean if they are cheating, Blizzard would’ve removed them or break them by now. :man_shrugging:

As much i understand the point you’re trying to make here, Blizzard defines on what is cheating here, and if it’s not cheating to them, then it’s fine. One form of Addon i can think of is if it automates something like healing or just outright plays the game for you. And not this “oh DBM and WA plays the game for you because it’s displaying so much info and it’s up to you to do as you please with it”, no. I mean … literally play the game for you or stuff that is literally cheating. Bots stuff, Seeing though Wall hacks and all that other jazz like changing the textures of a armor piece to find a certain player, or a model to find certain node and so on.

I know to some this sounds werid, but i don’t consider DBM and WA to be cheating since it’s really just UI addons giving you more information then necessary. Especially considering the other avenues of getting that information that being videos and such, it’s just Addon’s make that process more easier to access.

Weak Auras are degenerate.

Addons in general are not.

This feels like a 2005 thread “Thottbot is cheating!”

Hahaha, wait. people actually said that?

Who ever said there is no such thing as a stupid question never worked in retail or the hospitality industry.

Exactly . Blizz provides the source for people to make the addons so by doing so , Blizz has determined they are not and by default are therefore not cheating .

Depends on the addon and how you define cheating or in this case “Soft cheating”

:musical_note: Cheating WoW softly with his mod , cheating it softly with his mod :musical_note:

Weak Auras is by far the biggest culprit and honestly should be banned outright. DBM is and has toed the line very closely over the years. Neither is going to get banned though and Blizzard has admitted they design encounters, especially heroic and mythic, assuming those addons will be used. The biggest problem is it keeps up the eternal arms race between Blizzard and players where Blizzard’s only real course of action is to just keep making fights faster and faster paced with a longer laundry list of mechanics (often overlapping also). Those 2 addons are taking information the human is not going to realistically manually process and keep track of and regurgitate it back in the form of audio and visual cues even a monkey can be trained to adapt to and follow. It’s no different than when dot snapshotting was a thing and addons existed that basically lit up colors telling the player when it was beneficial or bad to overwrite dots or not. Tryhards act like they have this awesome level of awareness and skill but in nearly all cases, what they really have is a litany of weak auras telling them what button to press next and such.

This is, of course, defining “soft cheating” as something technically not against the letter of the rules but questionably/arguably against the spirit of the rules.

well, at least as it is not bot or automation, I.E. you still have to interact with the character a decent amount.

This is why it is within the letter of the rules but arguably not in the spirit of the rules. Yes the human must press the button but the addon is taking all of the actual skill and mental effort that comes with determining that the button is the optimal button to press. You could literally train a monkey to do this kind of effort (match a button press to what it sees on the screen)…heck you could probably even get an objectively dumber animal like a dog to do it even.

Weak Auras is as close to botting without actually botting…and DBM is maybe one step from that.

Whew, you must be fun!

Chickens respond really well to light up buttons, could train them with the right keyboard and WAs if you’re bored~
