Ardent Defender

When you level a Prot Pally, you eventually get Divine Protection at a low level, which is the same spell that Holy Pallies get (20% damage reduction, for 8 seconds, on a 1 minute cd).

When you hit level 50, Divine Protection “upgrades” to Ardent Defender (20% damage reduction, for 8 seconds, on a 2 minute cd).

How is that an upgrade? Yes, when active Ardent Defender “prevents” a killing blow by bringing you back to 20% health, but still. I’d rather have a 1-minute damage mitigation than a 2-minute one.

Usually when a spell “transforms” to another spell while levelling, it’s just a raw upgrade from the previous spell. To me, this is clearly a downgrade.

Thoughts?

ABOUT TIME SOMEONE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.
Ive been complaining about AD for a long time, it is waaaaay too long of a CD for such a short duration. Iron Bark for druids is on a 1min CD and increases the healing you do to the target. Like we need this and to be honest it needs to be baseline for all paladin specs.

That is an unfortunate quirk of the leveling process. In the grand scheme of things, it’s really not a big deal.

I still want WoTLK Ardent Defender back.

I agree it’s not a huge deal, but it’s something I decided to bring on the forums because it doesn’t make any sense.

I can count the number of times I’ve noticed AD preventing a death.

0, because it’s used preemptively to smooth damage to make it easier to stay alive, not OH SH… Imma die now. And the times I had used it in a situation where i was about to die, guess what happened… I died…

For sure, same.

At level 20 you need the 1 minute cd because you lack other survival utility.

At max level, you have Ardent Defender on a shorter cd than any other tank “dead by not dead” skill. You have bubble with taunt. You have Lay on hands. You have a silence like every 5 seconds.

TL:DR - Be happy Ardent Defender doesn’t have an 8 minute cooldown. It used to.

That isn’t the debate here. It never has been. I said in this post that Ardent Defender isn’t an upgrade over Divine Protection and then you go on a rant about Lay on Hands and Bubble taunt. Why?

Yea I thought it was another active mitigation we got with Divine Protection, not replacing it. I was so angry I stopped leveling prot for a little after

I hate this! Instead of having a nice 1 minute cooldown for good tanking mitigation we get a 2 minute cooldown that can save you from dying maybe? If I am going to die then let me die! Give me back the raw dependable mitigation that will help my healer during the majority of encounters and tanking mobs! This is not an upgrade. It discourages using the skill and basically steals a solid mitigation skill from prot pally. Not a fan.
