Arcane Mage Tank

Make arcane mages tanks. We need more tanking classes that can have dps ranged off specs. Make it happen blizz.

Arcane shields that deplete mana…Already happening.

I would LOVE a mage tank that utilized barriers to deflect blows and time magic to heal them.

Mage tanks in games are always super enjoyable to play when available!

That being said… It should be a 4th spec. Arcane should remain DPS.

mage is the last class that should be considered having a tank spec.

In all of world of warcraft you see mages protecting everyone with there shield…primarily arcane shields…

Why? Defensive magic is a thing and the concept isn’t exactly new.

I’d drop all of my other tanks in a heartbeat if I could roll as a magic based tank in WoW.

new class maybe, new spec is a stretch because i dont see them doing it without a different armor type which has never happened before. Maybe a new class with 2 specs, magic based warrior and magic based tank, but i dont see another spec working, it would be like a totally different class.

Arcane explosion to grab threat, Arcane shield to protect yourself and larger arcane shield to protect your allies. Would be easy to make off arcane mage.

Tanks need to be able to handle one-on-one blunt physical damage & keep the enemy’s attention. Mana shields, blinking left and right in squishy robes will not cut it.

Have you not seen Jaina or Kadgar use their arcane shields?

Maybe. I personally don’t see the need for heavier armour (the magic covers all of the defense) but I wouldn’t be torn up if they created a battlemage or sorcerer class or something instead of adding a fourth spec (though I would, admittedly, prefer the fourth spec.)

I have made some SUPER tanky mages in some RPGs that didn’t use shields or heavy armour though–Pathfinder: Kingmaker as example. It’s always a goal of mine.

I’ve also “tanked” keys on my mage in WoW though. Kiting is hecking fun.

So don’t blink? Use your imagination, friend! The kit would obviously have to be expanded to facilitate it but similar to a monk, you don’t take the hit in the first place–which makes the armour unnecessary.

Think about Maut…You have to drain his mana to do damage to him…etc.

The problem with magic is that it can be made to do anything. It can be defensive and it can be better at being defensive than armour or anything ever could be.

I think one of the reasons mage tanks are left out a lot is because it kind of invalidates the warrior type characters. Then again, in high fantasy, those types are already severely disadvantaged if they have no access to magic.

Still… I love mage-tanks and always will. Don’t expect to see them in WoW anytime soon but… I’ll keep making them elsewhere.

I’ll don’t really like doing it but would be try it again, since most of the time i do just that in the world any way.

Arcane is the best option for a magic tank. Make it happen blizz.

I would LOVE Mages having a tanking spec.

I’d prefer it as a new spec as I love playing the 3 specs we have now (I know they’re all dps, but each is still fun in its own right and circumstances).

Arcane Mage Tank

  • Arcane explosion for aoe threat
  • Arcane barage for slow and mana regen
  • Arcane shield to survive
  • Blink to kite
  • Arcane Shield deplete mana when hit
    *etc.

So many of the current spells could be used as tanking abilities.
