I am afraid to go raiding because I can’t be as good as some mages who are part of this data. How can you explain why Arcane mage is on top of DPS chart here?
People who play the Kyrian Harmony build well and those who can’t play it properly or otherwise folks like myself who don’t play it at all.
Arcane as a whole spec is not doing any better than the other 2 Mage specs. Only the Kyrian Harmony build can do the numbers but only if played perfectly and if you get lucky on the empowered ABarr crits (the 4 set bonus helps with that).
what is to not understand, playing hard spec equaling the highest dps is fair. If you don’t want the challenge to be in the top, play the easy specs.
There is also the variance of Arcane’s burst in play, since if you don’t crit (even with the tier set) enough at least during the [Radiant Spark] window, your DPS suffers quite a bit. This added to the comparative difficulty to most other specs to play is what causes its high variance in the Warcraft logs charts.
Thank you. Looks like the tier set is a key. I have ilvl 387 with random gear, but not a tier. I can do massive damage to a dummy, but suffer during mobility or brief trash fights. I will try to focus on getting my gear improved (stats and bonuses). Overall, I feel comfortable with Arcane (I played all specs over the course of my long WOW life). I am very frustrated with ROP, so I use IF for now while learning Arcane rotation. I expect my DPS to be a little less than expected. ROP is just too much on top of mage class rotation challenge (at least for me).
I am the exact same way so I completely understand. Unfortunately, RoP, RS, and Harmony go hand in hand and are the lynchpin of what makes that build work and do a ton of damage. If you take just one piece out of the equation the whole things falls like a house of cards because it’s all based on the very gimmicky cooldown stacking play style. It can certainly be high reward if executed properly but it is equally punishing if not done near perfectly every time and of course the crit RNG is entirely out of your control.
This is a situation where knowing your limitations and acknowledging them pays off. I’ve tried and I simply cannot contend with that complicated rotation that needs to go off without a hitch and in a very short window of time while also managing the dozens of movement mechanics on virtually all boss fights at the same time.
Don’t let me discourage you though, do try it out for yourself and see if you can get the hang of it, you may well be able to. I am just sharing my own experience as a veteran Mage player since Vanilla.
Kyrian Arcane is pretty damn good, well, the only mage spec/build capable of doing more than “slightly higher than tank damage”, unfortunately it has always been a rather gimmicky rotation that is awful for progression, once you know the fights it’s okayish to pull off but it’s definitely not to everyone. I abandoned my mage this xpac because I never found to be a particularly fun playstyle for me and right now it’s the only viable choice.
Every single class up there in the charts is 10x easier to play than Kyrian Arcane and are way more rewarding.
It does way more damage than tank lol. I just got my 2 set completed with a vault reward today with legs. My question is, why isn’t there a visual indicator buff that shows the increased Blast crit chance? Is the 2 set even working? I guess I’ll have to hit the dummy again to check it out.
Oh yeah, Kyrian Arcane definitely does more damage than Tank, it was a shot to the other mage specs/builds that to say they are in a bad spot would be an understatement.
Ehh, Blizzard usually doesn’t bother with visual indicators aside from a handful of core mechanics, probably need to get a weakaura running to keep track of it.
Yeah it’s working. I’m getting around 65% crit on Blast with 4 stacks. Right where it should be.
Arcane is doing good and fire frost are doing good on their niches.
there are no niches, they are literally at the bottom everywhere
I have been playing Arcane a while and what is currently giving us an edge is the Time-Breaching Talon - Item - World of Warcraft (wowhead.com)
I tried to play without it for the first two weeks as i saw it get nerfed in half and thought how good can it really be now, but its still strong as it give you a massive opener and a huge execute. I use it at a heroic dungeon level as it was easy to farm. Without this trinket, from my experiance arcane drops down a few levels.
Thats a good point,I dont think it would change much anyways. I get one called “bursting energy” for the 4 PC. I use the WA By Afenar_Mage that gives a clean UI and tracks it aswell.
They aren’t. Warcraft logs heavily disagrees with you.
All three mage specs are above shadow priests.
Eranog
Fire is the second best dps on the fight.
Terros
Fire 11 frost 12 arcane 14
Sannarth
Fire 2 frost 3 arcane 5
Kurog
Fire is 1
Thanks for confirming that you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about.
95 percentline is like 5 people in the world. Scale down to 70 and frost will be lower.
Again no one cares about 70%.
You don’t ever judge a specs performance based on the 70% or lower. It’s based on people that know how to play the spec.
So again thanks for proving you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Yup, it’s a function of the damage multiplier stacking. Because the entire build revolves around that any on-use trinket or additional damage increase buff will yield disproportionately higher benefit. It’s just such a terrible play style right off the bat with having to use Evocation as a glorified prepot even before a fight starts. It truly hurts my soul to play Arcane rn, lol.
Siphon Storm and Radiant Spark are the worst offenders IMO. Arcane would be a lot better to play without so many % increments.
I liked Dragonflight overall, but as someone playing Mage since 2010, I’m disappointed that Blizzard doubled down on Shadowlands Arcane gameplay style.
After raiding CE content non-stop for over 10 years, I’m finally afraid to raid, just because of how God awful it’s to play as Arcane rn, and to make matters worse I also don’t have 4p nor the Uldaman trinket.
It’s a depressing experience, I hoped for Fire/Frost buffs to be good enough to switch back, but sadly the buffs weren’t enough.
I don’t know what to do… after playing this game for so many years and yet having this many headaches and inability to pull off the high numbers makes me feel like trash.
That’s exactly right. Siphon Storm was an abomination from the 1st time it was introduced in BfA and no one used it. Same when it was re-introduced as a legendary in SL. So now they made it a forced auto include, just like they did with RoP, also a spell everyone hates. I am sensing a pattern here…
Same. Been playing since just a few months into Vanilla. SL Arcane was so bad it forced me to quit for the first time ever and now they’ve doubled down on it in DF when they could (and should) have simply brought back the Legion version of the spec. It’s a real shame because the expansion itself is well conceived and fun to play… when it works and isn’t bugged of course.
Idk, it’s still early days but I got my 4 piece, I got the Raszageth mount and I am almost done with the story. Those were my goals. I might stick around for a bit longer to get my ilvl to around 400 and then I might just call it quits again until the fix this mess or the next major content patch. Overall I am pretty disappointed.
