Arcane Linguist and Elixir of Tongues

A few days after the release of the Elixir of Tongues, Blizzard has modified the use of the item and has made it no longer possible to speak the opposing faction’s common language: Common for Alliance and Orcish for Horde. Now, because they have nerfed the potion (which is relatively fine when taking into account the issues with that ability), they have also gone back and nerfed Arcane Linguist, the passive ability mages are able to acquire to understand and speak the languages of your allies. Yes, the Elixir of Tongues could be considered a mistake on Blizzard’s part because the entire game is based on the faction gap, and we shouldn’t be able to speak to the opposing faction- however removing the ability to speak the racial languages of your allies is a real blow to role-players who might play a linguist or someone who knows more languages than the default 1-2. I, and many other people who roleplay do not see an issue with being able to communicate with different races using their language, especially if it is already exclusive to mages. Although Tongues, an addon that allows you to speak other languages exists, it only functions properly if those around you also have the addon installed. Please consider restoring the ability to its previous state, allowing us to speak the languages of our faction, as it adds for more flavor in roleplay, and allows us to customize our characters even further than what is already in place.

I say screw this. Let people on RP servers understand orcish/common no matter what race they are. Make the other languages something you have to grind and learn somehow. Give mages the ability to skip that process and know it all with Arcane Linguist.

I feel like I got bait and switched with my resubscription to this game. I come in thinking theres this potion that lets me talk to others and spend 5k+ gold only to realize it got stealth nerfed 2 days ago. There is no point to having an addon or a potion to talk to PEOPLE YOU ALREADY KNOW in this game.

We already had that function. It’s called discord. Steam. Literally anything outside the game. The in game communities for bnet communities suffice for RP events since that chat is also part of the game. What a bunch of wasted time and effort on something other games never have an issue with…

They changed Arcane Linguist? Man, that’s a low blow.

Let’s submit a ticket and hope it’s a bug.

It’s about as much of a bug as the new /whistle sound is. They got someone spending way too much time looking for minor stuff to change and less time actually improving the game. Anything that’s even remotely fun gets purged.

I would like to say I’m surprised but…nothing really does anymore.

So they nerfed the thing that they made to specifically fix something they broke, what trash is this?

Like I’m not even an RPer, and I barely understand the need for it, but seriously, this is a low blow. I know it had some issues in Battlegrounds, then DISABLE IT IN BGS!

Considering the Alliance and Horde have been helping one another the last few expansions, and we see characters talking to one another with no issues at all, it’s a “feature” that just needs to be dropped.

At this point, I say screw it. It’s in game, just make it happen by default already. Stupid that they have all this stuff in game where opposing factions are clearly speaking to us with no issues at all, but “the champion” of said faction is too stupid to learn languages?

I guess I’d feel differently if they actually showed us in game that there is a language barrier beyond what we have. So far it just feels like everyone but the player can understand opposing factions, which is weird considering we get quests from opposing factions all the time. ;O

Eh, it’s just their narrative thing to keep pushing useless faction war. If this were still RTS it could still work, but faction war doesn’t work in MMO’s because neither side can win. So at the end of the expansion we’ll just go back to status quo.
