Arcane: Cold intellect

What exactly is cold intellect and how is it applied towards Arcane users such as mages?

If the light comes from within an individual’s force through the mind and heart ;be it faith or sheer willpower; then I can assume Arcane is the manifestation of logic and manipulation of energy without the mind and heart in it?

Arcane magic is math, if I recall right.

Thats what I thought, Arcane being the math & science while the light is but the inner within you without or something like that

Arcane magic is the magic of logic and order. It is sort of like if there was an underlying energy to RL physics, an essence of the logic binding those rules together to govern the cosmos.

Mages rely on formulas and to some degree force of will to basically twist the universe’s arm behind its back until it cries uncle and allows momentary breaches in its laws. It is this breaching of the laws of normal reality that make arcane effects occur usually.

Makes sense then,

Thanks for clarifying that!

Isn’t that what Cold intellect is though?

Is “cold intellect” a lore term that’s new for me, or is it just how you’re describing intellect?

Is a term that caught my eye while I looked up “Arcane” over in wowpedia,

I don’t have the trust level to post the link but its there if you look it up,

When I googled it it says that is a matter of thinking logical and reasoning and quite detach/ absence from emotions and innovation like the arts etc., basically Stephen Hawkins and Neil Degrasse are probably examples of cold intellectuals and maybe Sigmund Freud,

Although I am still quite trouble to make some sense of it in relation to Arcane and within the lore term in it

If that’s the case then why is Arcane’s rotation so brain dead?

Checkmate, Dalaran.

The word you’re looking for is “elegant” or perhaps “fully simplified.”

Tip: even if you don’t have the trust level to post clickable links, you can post non-clickable ones by putting the ` character before and after the URL.

Arcane energy is the manipulation of energy from the Twisting Nether…collected by the Well of Eternity and distributed throughout leylines. Unfiltered,it frequently becomes a gateway addiction to the fel. or it leads to Withering.

Ahhh I see,

So therefore Arcane energy is an outer source ; that can be tapped; and not inner coming from within the individual like the Light?

Yep, that’s why Illidan’s creatin of the Second Well was so important. without either Well, arcane magic would not exist on Azeroth. In Outland the arcane is powered by the impingement of the Twisting Nether itself. That’s also why prior to the destruction of Draenor there originally was no arcane tradition on the planet, just Shamans and Warlocks.

(Clarification): Negative. The Well of Eternity is Arcane energy itself. The lifeblood of the Titans is all arcane energy. They are, after all, entities of the arcane, as seen in the cosmology chart. That’s not to say arcane energy doesn’t also exist in the Twisting Nether, because it does, simply that the Well of Eternity is a font of arcane energy because Azeroth is a Titan.

(Commentary): Even, ‘filtered,’ it’s still a gateway drug.

(Clarification): Withering is a phenomenon among the Nightborne as a result of a lack of arcane energy, typically that associated with the Nightwell. This is in contrast to the Wretched which Blood Elves and High Elves are at risk of, and is a result of tapping into too much arcane energy, more than their bodies can handle.

Terrifies me and also makes me sad then that we’re leeching arcane “blood” and they ley lines being it’s “veins” from the Titan herself.

I have no idea how we’re still living if drawing too much can bring bigger cataclysm like the Well of Eternity. Similar to our rl climate change or whatever issue when we’re leeching more than enough our world’s resources,

Thanks for your input

(Commentary): The best way to look at it is that magic is like water; it’s never really destroyed or forever gone, it gets recycled. Also, to clarify, the Well of Eternity was created when the Titans ripped one of the Old Gods from the surface of Azeroth. It left a massive gaping wound that bled. The Well of Eternity was constructed over that wound to cap it, and for the arcane energy to be cycled through the world to promote growth and healing for the planet.

Interesting,

Hence goes it is addicting, it can narrow your mind without proper understanding and like ice cream it brings the denizens from the nether

(Commentary): Older quests describe the addictive element to be on a psychological and physical level from actually casting spells, that once you cast a spell the desire to do so again, to feel the rush of power once more, is very alluring. Arcane magic has also been known to expand minds, not narrow them. Goblins, for example, are intelligent thanks to Kaja’mite, which itself is related to Azerite I believe.

They have largely done away with the physiologically addictive nature of arcane magic unless you use it excessively, and even then (usually) only if are a race like an elf which is exceedingly sensitive to magical energies due to something in their biology. That physiologically addictive quality was over time mostly shuffled to Fel magic. As mentioned above what Arcane DOES have is a psychologically addictive component.

It is pretty heady stuff to force the universe to warp at your whim. It tends to give users an excessive ego, making you push just a little bit more, and a little bit more. Until you push too far. Reality does not like being warped so much, and there is a pretty terrible blacklash if you loose control.

It is also not correct to say there would be straight up no arcane energy without the well as per modern lore. Arcane energy is a fundamental part of the fabric of reality. It is the essence of logic and order, and as such you can find it anywhere in reality. It is really a matter of concentration. The well creates a rather massive fount of power, which makes it easier to cast gigantic spells.

Mages without giant founts of power have come up with effective means of dealing with the issue. The spell Evocation and Mana Gems are all about gathering arcane energy from your surroundings and storing them for later use when needed.
