I traded gold between Retail and Classic and got flagged for RMT, and subsequently banned. Either the gold was tainted, or the system detected something unusual. You may choose whether or not to believe me, but I tried doing everything by the books and according to the WoW TOS.
This is my first offense since the account’s creation, and I genuinely didn’t intend to participate in any form of illegal transaction.
Is there a chance I could write some sort of apology, admitting I should’ve been more attentive with whom I’m trading, and that I didn’t intend to break the rules, and by doing so maybe get the ban reduced or even lifted?
I can assure you I researched this topic a good amount and everyone, including blizzard CS and an official article said that it’s “unsupported but not prohibited” meaning that if you get scammed it’s at your own risk and they won’t give back the gold.
Now they updated the article 14 hours ago and it says it’s prohibited so FYI to anyone who wants to do it now.
When I made the trade the article still stated that it’s just unsupported.

its not that they disagree with me, its just a “legally grey” area. it is 100% frowned upon which is why they dont offer support when you get scammed.
and those are reasons why i think trading gold should be a bannable offense.

Its not grey, its been explicitely said its allowed but they don’t help with scams because they don’t want to, not because they frown on it. If they frowned on it they would just ban it. It sells tokens which is why they allow it.
Its not cheating if they creators of the game say its not. It takes a massive inflated ego to think you know better than the creator of the game what the rules should be. Should we change chess because you don’t like the way the knight moves?
I love this game and want people to enjoy it. I’m not the one going around telling people they are wrong for how they play.

Trading gold across WoW realms or factions, or different versions of WoW (Modern to Classic), is prohibited. Involvement in a trade of this nature can result in account penalties, up to and including, account closure.
Sadly that is normally the issue. It is a common way for gold sellers to give you their illicit gold and get your valid gold in return. I think that is why they have now made it against the rules to trade gold between versions. It used to be “unsupported” because of the risks, but they seem to have stopped it all together - rule wise.
Your only option is to appeal via ticket. You will only get templates back based on their decision (uphold, overturn, reduce penalty, escalated to Hacks), but you can appeal until they tell you it is bordering GM harassment. Be polite of course.
The rest of the argument about policy - that is not something we really have much say in as players. Blizzard has changed it likely due to people getting burned with illicit gold. Arguing and getting personal about it is not really logical or constructive.
