No, I’m not crying. You’re crying.

Rift was good.
I still have my collectors edition box.
Sobbing.
I loved Rift. The first day I played I got help from a member of the opposite faction so I was bouncing around, dancing and trying to thank him and he just goes ‘you’re welcome’ and rides off. I didn’t know you could talk cross faction! I loved that and the way rifts would randomly spawn above my head in the world. I miss that.
Maybe it’s because I was a DAOC gamer and really like my pvp, but I honestly loved the Warhammer MMO.
Pity they can’t make something like that with the general quality of WoW.
i made a decision for my life a while back WoW will be the last MMO i play, when im done with it im done with MMO’s i gave so many a shot and they were “fun” but not lasting fun like i get out of WoW. ESO was last one i was really enjoying till my account got banned 3 times in a month for now reason =/ (selling gold LOL i never had enough gold on that game to sell nor would i have) and after the third i was like “forget it”
the ones i tryed though in no order
Aion, GW, GW2, Rift, Warhammer, Wildstar, age of Conan, SWTOR, Everquest2, ESO.
yeah - it was directly advertised as a “wow killer”. I remember getting really excited about it during the beta and played a lot the first two months of launch, then I just got bored and came back to WoW.
Rift is the game that taught me that my need to come back to WoW is not so much rooted in time investment, but emotional investment. I can start a new toon in FF or any of these other MMOs and be at end game in a few weeks, a month or two tops. It’s not that it took me 15 years to get to where I am in WoW. I can start an alt here and in 2 weeks be geared for end game raiding.
It’s the emotional investment that I’ve put into the game that keeps bringing me back. I’ve given half my life to this game. It makes it hard to just walk away from.
I think you nailed this. The emotional investment with WoW, that’s what’s unique.
One of the most beautiful pieces of music… Jeff worked magic with this game’s soundtrack. <3
I remember the slogan they pushed “You’re Not In Azeroth Anymore” thankfully I came back
Rift was great fun at the start. I didn’t stick with it because I was so focused on WoW at that point, but I am disappointed it didn’t do better.
I feel similarly about Wildstar. Great game to just run around in, loved the themes and visuals, great race and class choices, combat was fun. They just didn’t get the formula right and made some bad decisions. I’ll miss that game.
I really enjoyed Rift. Loved seeing those rifts pop up, it was amazing.
Rift and zone invasion hunting was one of my favorite things to do in the game for sure. Really made the world feel alive.
It was definitely a certain type of fire.
I remember playing that game for an hour then going back to MapleStory.
Like dumpster fire I guess.
Oh you mean the wow killer? No, I never played it.
Just like earth!
Same.
Their Class system was fun. Being able to cover any role in multiple ways with your toon was a blast. They also had some really unique specs (Souls in the game) like Defiler and Chronomancer (which Blizz ripped off with Disc Priests) and Riftblades (Blizz took a lot of the ideas for Brewmasters).
The one issue for me was while the graphics were amazing for the time and superior to WOW they never had the animation polish we get from Blizzard games. That was a problem in most of the competitors that popped up after WOW. They had trouble getting the more realistic design to work well with combat animations. In particular when you canceled an ability mid cast.
I still miss it though. The mid to late 2000’s were a golden age for MMO’s. LOTRO, AoC, Rift, CIty of Heroes, Guild Wars, Warhammer, etc. There seemed to be a new one every couple of months.
