Anyone else wonder why Shamans can not use swords?

Just wondering why us Shamans can not use swords. Axes, maces fist weapons, daggers are ok but not swords. What is the lore behind that.

Just doesn’t match the theme of a Shaman.

I could understand if Shamans were an orc only class but they arent. With the introduction of new races that can be Shaman it should be that Shamans can use new types of weapons like swords

Occasionally they enforce lore. And like an occasionally enforced law, it tends to be at the discretion of the person at the controls during enforcement. Apparently 1-handed swords are in high demand as they’re used by checks notes some Outlaw Rogues, Protection specs, and…nope, that’s it.

Interestingly, during the patch when Blizz allowed rogues to use 1H axes (ToC during WotLK i believe), they strongly contemplated allowing Shamans to wield swords instead. However, I think there was a blue post later on that said the aesthetic of rogues with axes made more sense than Shaman with swords.

So, we almost had it at one point. But that was 10 years ago and doesn’t look to be changing anytime soon.

Frost DK, Havoc, WW, several casters

For +Str swords:
Frost DK, Prot Pally and Warrior.

For +Agi (which is the case of Enh):
Outlaw, Havoc, Veng and Windwalker.

For +Int:
All Warlock specs, all Mage specs (Mistweaver?) and Holy Paladin.

I’m sure there’s more I haven’t covered…

I believe it stems from Vanilla where Shaman were Horde Only and had a more Tribal feel where as Swords tend to have a more civilized feel to them.

That’s my assumption at least… Though, if you ask the game itself…

It seems to think Shaman should be able to use Swords :thinking:

And see if it was still just orcs and trolls that could be shamans I could see it. But now we have so many other races that can be shamans. I say open it up allow us to use swords. Sadly I have seen more swords with the stats I need drop on my shaman than axes, maces or fist weapons. And that is me simming my stats from raid bots.
