I’ll always play better on what I find fun over what sims the best.
Like the trap/flare legendary… nope nope nope. It could sim 9004% higher than the rest and with me be a DPS loss because I never use the dang thing.
All my covenant choices are theme/attitude based for each character.

it isnt’ like covenants are going to be balanced the same in 6 months. pick what you like, those picking cookie cutter will likely have to switch and farm renown multiple times by end of expansion or will be doing like others and just picking what they like by that point.

Yeah pretty much. I think all the meta lemmings are making a mountain out of a molehill with it. They will also be the first to whine when their FOTM covenant gets nerfed.

I just chose what didn’t feel like utter garbage and would be practical for multi specs…was pretty easy when most choices were just plainly meh for my class

Since I’m not going to be doing Mythic+, or N/H/M raids, I’ll just choose what I want. I have yet to finish the Revendreth story since I’ve been busy PvPing, I have all my honor gear except one of the trinkets, but I’ll most likely choose what I think is the coolest.
I am not a hardcore raider, pvp-er or M+ key pusher so my choice of covenant was purely based on cosmetics (mogs/mount). I am in the same boat as you OP. Candle-shoulders and tombstone back is why I picked the Venthyr. Also, blood illusion. I wanna make a Blood Shaman themed transmog set.
I am picking based on what feels right for my characters, except my death knights, they are all going to go with the abomination factory because I love some abomination pets.
Originally I was going to go with what transmog looked best but they all look pretty cool, so that factor got screwed.
Mostly in that boat but there’s definitely something to be said about if the cov ability is fun or not. I don’t care much about numbers but I do care about fun, and some abilities are just … meh. Kinda hard to go with a covenant that has an ability so uninteresting that I forget to even use it.
I care on my main.
On my alts I’m just gonna do whatever. I’ll choose them based on theme or meme.
I had to do this with my talents. Specced out of Rushing Jade Wind-- the objectively best talent on the row-- because I hate trying to keep up the buff.
On Covenants I’m just going with the abilities that seem the most fun.

A lot of the time I forget to reactivate my Flagellation to benefit from the haste bonus. I didn’t exactly choose Venthyr for the abilities.
Thats because blizz is stuck in the mindset that to fix something, something else must be nerfed. The solution to Every druid except 5 choosing Night Fae isnt to nerf night fae. Its to boost the other covs.

the venthyr works good with enhance i think but honestly i don’t care. wish they was never thought up honestly which led to in the end having to go back to oribos every dang time to fly to another area just annoys me.
