When it comes to subjective things? Seems to come up constantly when people talk about classic.
Sure things can be objectively "outdated"... technology, medicial advice, etc. But I keep seeing it pop up for mechanics in WoW.
For example daze, and the amount of people on retail who complain and call it an outdated mechanic. Why is it an "outdated concept" for the world to be dangerous and having consequences?
Same thing with leveling/questing. Always called outdated. Why? According to whom? Just seems like a dismissive way to say my opinion is correct and yours is wrong because it's older.
Anyone else have this pet peeve? Or maybe can explain to me how something is objectively "outdated" because it's been around a long time? Is "tried and true" not a thing?
I think it can be appropriate when speaking in terms of what the overall market wants. Looking at successes, failures and sales figures of various products. A specific mechanic might be less successful in the current market leading people to use the term "outdated" for less popular systems and designs.
That doesn't mean there is anything objectively wrong with those systems. And it's not always very clear what specific systems lead to the downfall of a game. People seem to cherry pick whatever they personally don't like and point to that as the cause.
But like you said it's usually used in a dismissive manner rather than for the sake of argument.

They use that term because they're not real gamers; they are consumers of a product nothing more.
For them, its the same as watching a movie; they cant be bothered by "Doing" things. For the very small minority of players in modern WoW that actually participate in its "meaningful content"; they're like 1% of the total gross population doing the bleeding edge of progression in raid or Gladiator and above in arena.
Everything else is very casual in modern WoW, and because of that the general population is very lazy and expects everything handed too them with out any sort of resistance or fight.
Ya know, kinda like a welfare check; er EBT I think they call it now.

My kids make me feel outdated.
I have worked in my industry longer than some of my employees have been breathing. That makes me feel outdated.
I hate that word. lol (jk) I earned every gray hair.

eating vegetables and fruit is outdated. Still works!
outdated is a subjective term, its simply to convey the idea that what you are using/doing can be replaced by another object/method and done better.
familarity often breeds contempt as some people have said. Not always true though. But i do believe we should look to see if there are methods and objects that can do a better job or process than what we orginally started with.

I know what you guys mean, I think it is definitely an overused word and people toss it around at anything they don't personally like.
For me though, the word that gets me the most is the word "Sharding." For some reason, whenever I see that word in a thread title or in someone's post my brain reads it as "Sharting," I can't help it.

I think it simply refers to mechanics that were designed with a different audience in mind. Retail is geared more towards casual gamers with limited investment in the game. Things like Daze slow down the already tedious process of running between world quest A and B, therefore it becomes 'obsolete'.
There is no longer consequence to running through a large pack of mobs. Even elites can be brushed off easily. You just run around whacking things until they die, collect your shiny azerite and move on to the next circle on your map.
And I'm just ranting now, sorry :(

My pet peeve is any form of speech suppression based on the premise that someone might not like what was said or a particular word.
It's not outdated.
It's literally a completely different game design entirely and it's hard because of the grind and the effort to work with 40 people with crap talent specs.
That is part of the fun

You could make the same argument against the use of immersion for the classic game.
At the end of the day its all subjective and individual opinion. Buzzwords catch on.
Is vanilla outdated? Absolutely, its almost 14 years old and they have to recreate it because it was so outdated. Are classic cars outdated - yup you will prolly have a hard time finding parts... is the classic snes outdated - yup but it was brought back to life with the console.
Being outdated isnt always a bad thing. It all boils down to individual preference.

Irony off the charts here. Considering the usage that OP is complaining about is generally intended to shut down arguments by presenting a subjective statement as fact without any context.

Game mechanics can certainly be outdated. Mostly I would use the term if the purpose of the mechanic is no longer something that appears to be part of current design philosophy. You can still disagree on how you see the current design philosophy, but calling something outdated can be valid.
If you consider daze for instance, a mechanic that slowed down movement and made places other than roads significantly more dangerous at the start of the game vs being able to fly in the majority of the content or being able to use easily obtained items to negate daze (while mounted at least), groups of mobs not being a serious danger to most classes, along with entire specs immune to it in the first place, I can certainly see how it can be considered outdated as it no longer is effective in the role it played.
If you think the daze mechanic served a different purpose at the start or see consider the no fly content to far more important than the rest then perhaps your thoughts would differ. The info you consider important in making your decision may differ so your outcome stance would be different.
