I don’t mean the tryhard pvpbro guilds that thinly masquerade as RP guilds, just maybe the ones that embrace the dangers of being out in the world, even if you get ganked sometimes. I’m fed up with guilds that immediately cry griefer any time pvp happens during an event. Hoping to find one that’s okay with a little bit of unplanned world pvp and is okay with weaving those battles into their stories.
Speaking from experience, that’s not going to be many RP guilds. Most well established ones have set and established events, things are prewritten. Events flow from one to another, and risking an entire block of happenings in a campaign to go bash your face against a bunch of gankers, off-servers or non RPers is just too much of a risk, even for some RP/PVP guilds.
Now, there are some light RP guilds that can do this, and are willing to do so, but they often won’t have stories or campaigns as involved. The two styles just don’t mesh, and never will.
Check out Horde Army. It’s got a big roster, but I know the Guild Leader and most of its officers are pretty big into PvP, RP PvP and the like. I’m going to assume that includes doing stuff in Warmode.
Yeah, I’m echoing what Raseri has said. You aren’t going to find many, if any, RP/PVP guilds that always have WM on for the RP events. In my experience, RP is the one time that WM is turned off. No one’s intentionally planning to be ganked while writing a well-crafted post. And if you leave WM on whilst standing around typing… Well, it’s only fair game for the other players with WM on too.
That’s not to say that elements of what happens in WPVP isn’t going to be incorporated to the RP storyline. But again, as Raseri pointed out, there’s just too many variables to constantly weave it all in as IC. Especially when you WILL encounter gankers, entire LFGs dropping in on your head, and other less than ideal PVP circumstances.
That said, there’s some great RP/PVP guilds on both factions if you can set aside a few of your expectations.
The removal of World Defense and introduction of Warmode has put a large damper on RP PvP guilds, tbh.
-Squints-
Keep in mind WrA was never a PvP server. The vast majority of RP guilds arent really gonna be all that interested in RPPVP.
You’ll probably have better luck finding a guild on ED that suits your needs.
ED isn’t doing so hot lately, and it’s because of RP guilds getting crashed by non-RP guilds in the “name of wPvP”. (Among other reasons.)
RP-PvP is more organized lately because of that.
And sorry, people have every right to “cry” when you have entire 40 man raid groups of non RP players dropping in and just utterly devastating small groups.
What you’re looking for doesn’t exist anymore, and hasn’t existed for at least a couple expansions. And frankly, the attitude you’re showing is part of it.
People just want to RP-PvP. Not PVP-PvP.
f for world defense. gone way too soon
“I wasn’t griefing them. I only showed up unannounced, starting “helping” by ganking them unsolicited, then insulted them when they complained.”
I’m unsure the point of that comment. But if an event takes place in Warmode then “unsolicited PvP” is kinda the name of the game, and if you don’t want to participate in that, then stay out of Warmode.
PvPing someone who specifically opts into the specifically advertised PvP mode is not griefing. I say that as someone who rarely goes into Warmode because I’m more into RP at this point, and I got most of my PvP blood out back when I was on Tichondrius, which is about a hundred times worse than any PvP that happens here on this realm. Wyrmrest is one of the more respectful servers I’ve seen in regards to PvP, occasional drama aside.
(I apologize for dragging this off topic, but people complaining about PvP hbappening after opting into PvP is my pet peeve and has been for years to add something to the thread: Horde side, The Vol’kar Legion is an amazing group of heavy RPers who participate in structured WPvP on the horde side. And they are also seeking to put together an RBG group for Shadowlands, on the Alliance The Seventy Third is an awesome group of folks from ED and amazing RPers in their own right who also dive headfirst into WPvP and they are brutal to go up against. I’ve been among their opponents before and they HURT XD)
I’ve actually RP’d in Warmode. Absolutely nothing happened. No attacks. No one to attack. It was normal RP with a slight current of anticipation that led to nothing.
Warmode is too borked to RP in on a regular basis. It’s instanced, so you don’t know if you’ll end up in the same instance as someone else who is RP-PvPing. Truthfully, you probably won’t. Ever. And most of the PvPers when you do find them tend to group up in zergs, or they’re from off-server. It’s not like it was in the old days of world PvP. You won’t see your RP-PvP friends on the other faction.
If you find a zerg, they’ll probably camp your event. You probably won’t get reinforcements like you used to if you call for people in the zone or trade to come help. No one does that anymore. And if you do and your group gets too big, it’ll pop you into a completely different phase.

The moment I see more than a few off-server people from non-RP realms, I lose all interest and go back to battlegrounds or RP.
What’s the point? They’ll just group finder in more people, and there’s 0 immersion.
Agree with Shirt.
My guild will group up in Warmode, communicate in voice, hit certain cities, move fast and hard and do everything it can to summon a big response and hit it back before it gets too organized. That’s gamey, and fun when we’re in the mood for it.
My guild will also do RP/PVP where people are flagged but Warmode is off, and that’s a different beast, especially the more immersed you get. RP/PVP involves setup, complex storylines. Characters will talk to each other, have conversations. The opposing generals will have preliminary talks. Brothers will share nervous jokes before the lines meet. Medics and healer will do their best to staunch the bleeding from that axe blow the horde gave one of your best captains. It’s fast paced, intense, and unbelievably fun, but it HAS to be controlled and kept under tight wraps. None of this can happen if XxXbigbuttzXxx jumps out of nowhere and continues attacking you while spamming “u suck doodooz lol” using his 80 macros he made for the sole purpose of making the other faction miserable. The immersive story of two armies meeting up against each other is ruined if 40 people from Sargeras trample over the event because it was in the way and they’re on to the next reward.
The two systems are NOT and never will be the same thing, nor will you find them used for it.
pours one out for WorldDefense
Unfortunately blizz axing PVE and PVP servers and introducing Warmode literally PVP’d RP-PVP.
It’s bonkers the affect losing WorldDefense has had on it.
It used to be, I could go out to Ashenvale or Darkshore and if I started attacked Alliance quest givers someone from Kalimdor Collective or Sentinels would be there to take me out. Flip that around and try killing NPCs in Crossroads or Brill and you’d have Shadows or Southfury after you.
I used to keep geared characters parked in Brill and Crossroads, so if I’m off doing quests or RPing on another character and WorldDefense started going off I could quickly hop onto that character and defend the area. Which would sometimes lead to RP once everyone was done acting like roudy children because guess who are the only people to bother defending low level zones with no rewards? RPers
idk what the future of RP-PVP will look like going forward but my outlook is not very positive. I don’t think looking for it in warmode is gonna be the answer because like Kirsy said, phasing and off server groups totally ruins that. like dont even get me started on phasing, that crap is so broken.
Warmode needs to be restricted to server only. I find myself hating having offserver help as much as I hate fighting offservers.
Or at least keep it to RP and formerly RPPvP servers – and try to keep it balanced numbers wise.
e.g. if you’re in Nazjatar and make a group, only people from RP servers will see it or be able to join.
If we had a mix of WrA, Moonguard, ED, Ravenholdt etc. and a fun 30v30 or something it wouldn’t be so bad. Maybe.
That would definitely be better.
If warmode restricted to only piling all the RP realms into a PVP shard would probably revitalize RP-PVP in so many ways. We still have the problem with the RP populations being split but at least it’d make PVP more enjoyable when its names of people and guilds I recognize instead of rando offer server pvp players.
I still laugh and groan thinking about the night we tried to counter a raid camping the invasion dailies but the game kept pushing us into a different shard/phase/realm/idk when our group of mostly WRA people got too big. And its so dumb because PVP DIDNT HAPPEN even thow we WANTED to PVP lmao. I hate sharding so much!
The Grim currently has Warmode on for all RP events, meetings, etc. While Grim are out on their own questing or whatever, it’s their choice, but when we’re grouped up, we are in Warmode and prepared to deal with attacks.
That said, we’re considering changing that rule, just because this doesn’t give us exposure to other roleplayers, because it seems they all play with Warmode off.
