I am looking to get back into Vanilla WoW with a few friends. Is there a populated server with a fair amount of people similar to a medium or high population the way it use to be?

You can get a feel for the server population by checking out ironforge.pro, which is based on unique character raid logs.
If you prefer pvp whitemane was recently 3 to 1 horde to ally.
For pve mankrik was recently 4 to 1 ally to horde.
Two friends and I leveled ally from 1-30 on whitemane ally this past few weeks before transferring to mankrik which has way more people.
Mankrik ally is a good leveling experience. Live world with dungeons being run.
I’m dungeon diving with myguildies in the NA PvP Era East cluster of benediction/faerlina/heartseeker/incendius/netherwind. We’re a small community but actively help our levelers/newbies reach whatever goals that they wanna set.
this isn’t applicable to Classic Era

Ah, yeah my bad! I assumed Wrath Classic, but the OP even stated Vanilla WoW!
