Any reasons to not main a hunter in Classic?

So I’ve never played Vanilla Wow, I’m a Wrath baby. However, I’ve always wanted to. I’ve never tried out a private server either. I’ve been watching a lot of game play from the streamers and even old Vanilla videos. Is there any true reason to not main a Hunter? To me, they look like the most fun and best class by a long shot. I know everyone’s going to tell me to play what I want, but I’m looking for some veteran advice. Is there a true downside to the class that makes it unbearable to play. Any advice on the most fun classes to play at endgame/Level would be appreciated as well! I’m also thinking priest for my healer, but I hate ooming to fast. Do any healing specs have better mana pools?

Aside from bad players thinking they can look down on you, no. In Vanilla Hunter was easy to play average, and good hunters did good DPS. It wasn’t a disliked class because of its meta. It was disliked because of its frequency.

I dislike managing pets. I don’t mind other people having them, but it is not a fun activity for me.

Well played Hunters are a massive advantage to any group. They bring a great deal of utility to dungeon and raid groups.

Thank you!

The only real reasons you may not want to play hunter:

  1. If you are overly sensitive to people making fun of hunters.
  2. If you truly normally play in the top 1% of raids and want a competitive spot, because hunters are a little overplayed (hunters are actually required in some raids so there are spots for them, but usually more people roll hunters than there are spots so you might get wait listed).
  3. If you don’t like playing pet classes.

If you enjoy the play style, are willing to be a more casual raider or PVP, and can ignore or poke back at hunter jokes, feel free to roll hunter.

  • Not wanting to bother with pet maintenance/pathing/etc.

  • Not wanting to have less bag space because of quivers

  • Not wanting to have a harder rotation than almost every other class

  • Wanting to top the charts in raids

None of these make hunter unbearable to play, but there’s plenty of people that prefer to play other classes because of these reasons.

They can bring a lot to a group but they also require a fair amount of player skill to play to its best potential.

Thanks so much! That was truly helpful!

Play what you like. It’s a game. Play what “looks fun to you” so you can “have fun”.

Don’t listen to little square icon armchair yahoo’s like me.

You listed a couple good points in there that might make me lean towards the priest, hmmmm.

I played hunter in Vanilla and raided at every level.

DPS dips off a bit midway through AQ40. You still have plenty of utility and enough dps to warrant your slot up into Naxx.

In PvP, hunters are top dogs in open world and are very powerful in BGs. They require a bit more technique than most classes, but when you’re good it feels rewarding.

Hunters are top 3 in farming gold and supplies. As a hunter I was never lacking what I needed for raids, got my epic mount very quickly at 60, and never really felt the stinging from respec costs. Hunters could just go out and make a few hundred gold in various locations in a short amount of time. I had my TBC epic flying Mount money (5,000g) before I even knew there was a TBC coming…

Hunters just get it done in every aspect of the game.

Hunters are cool imo. Heaps of fun. I already have a gigantic alt list lol. I will probably play every single ranged class.

Thank you! Nice to see that you also play my server in retail! I’m excited to try them out!

The biggest reason to not play a hunter is that they have very poor scaling after 60. This is largely because pets do not scale in any way with gear, yet they make up a good portion of your damage. So even though Hunter is a “pure,” their raid DPS goes down quickly in comparison as you go up the tiers. Additionally, because the damage of their abilities is based on actual weapon damage and not on DPS, gearing is wonky with higher tier and ilvl gear not being upgrades in many instances. That is not a hunter issue alone, but it is something to keep in mind.

There are also many other wonky mechanics for Vanilla Hunter, including standing still to “cast” auto shot and having to FD to use traps (can only be cast out of combat). It is this last and the no pet scaling that are really the biggest issues imo.

Having said that, it is the best class for solo PvE, good for group PvE and good for PvP.

Same! I also want one healer. Having trouble on the class choice though!

Don’t Play It If:

  • You want to top Damage Meters
  • You don’t want to compete for a raid spot
  • You have bad internet
  • You want a casual experience

Do play it if:

  • You want a more involved raiding DPS class
  • You want to speed run
  • You want to rofl over kids in STV

Everyone hears about how easy hunters are, and in a way, they are. They have a really low entry cap to be able to play them. They are fast levelers, and pets are strong for pvp early on. That said, in order to play them well, the ceiling is quite high. Your weapon speed changes your rotation, you have to have decent coordination to not clip attacks. In pvp, you have to deal with kiting and dead zones.

But man they are fun.

1 thing I dont understand is why is it considered a “newbie” class… If im not mistaken vanilla hunter (until TBC or maybe wotlk) was one the classes that had a LOT of skills/spells and keybindings(and macros) required… thats NOT newbie friendly

It’s considered a newbie class because it was very newb friendly and easy to play decently. It was extremely difficult to play well however.

I appreciate your comment. These are the types of things I was looking for in this thread. So that I know exactly what I’m getting myself into and don’t end up wasting a bunch of time!
