An Update on Our Response to the DDoS Attacks

We have begun resurrecting player-characters that were lost during recent distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on our Hardcore realms. Our preliminary focus has been on characters that died during attacks on March 22, 23, and 24, and we are expanding the scope of our review to consider resurrections of characters lost during confirmed DDoS incidents after those dates.

For dead characters that were transferred from Hardcore realms to Normal (PvE) realms, we have taken steps to return these characters to the Hardcore realms in the state they were in prior to being transferred, and we have flagged them to be playable as though they never died when you next log in.

  • You must go to the character log-in screen on your Hardcore realm and log into the previously-deceased character to complete the process.

In the event of future character deaths due to DDoS attacks, we will only restore characters that remain on their Hardcore realm. Please note that in the future, should your character die due to a DDoS attack on a Hardcore realm, it cannot be restored if the character is subsequently transferred to a Normal (PvE) realm.

We are continuing to strengthen the resilience of WoW realms and the speed at which we respond to character deaths on Hardcore realms caused by DDoS attacks.

As a reminder, Blizzard Customer Support cannot assist with issues related to characters who have died on Hardcore realms. Please do not contact Blizzard Customer Support with any inquiries regarding character deaths on Hardcore realms.

Whoa… I’m back. TY Blizz!

Wait, login failed and character still on the other server. Hoping there’s just a second button that needs to be clicked for us transfers.

4 hours post update, transferred character returned to the right server but still unable to log in.

12 hours post update and was finally able to log back in alive!

Streamer privileged. They get us killed in the weeks prior but the rezzes only go out for them. Any others that got help were just collateral.

For characters that transferred you are working on getting them back. But what about deleted characters that we cannot restore due to already making a new character with the same name?

My warrior died Saturday 22nd right when OF was pulling trash in BWL and they had multiple people DC the same time as me. Also, Blizzard CS posted that they are experiencing a Bnet DDOS attack 2:30 PM March 22nd. I have photo proof of deathlogs with 100+ dead same time as me around this time. Are you going to revie players that this happen to before the 24th date? Your post makes it sound like only after the 24th and we would appreciate a little clarity on this. Thank you

The post is clear. They care about the optics only enough to rez those that died along with the streamers and only because those streamers needed rezzing.

Multiple streamers died during those attacks on RWF. Quit shifting focus to something that isn’t real.
