An instant cast melee mage

I have an idea I’ve been tinkering with. Its an instant cast melee mage.
Here’s what the rules are for it so far.

  1. Only offence spell allowed are instant cast, ie arcane blast, fire blast and so on.
  2. You can only use swords, even in the beginning, so better get used to punching stuff till you can buy the skill and a sword.
  3. You have to be an alchemist and herbalist. Classic is best for this as you can use more potions.
  4. Never wear robes. All chest pieces must look like shirts or vests.
  5. No wands.
  6. You MUST melee every mob you fight.
  7. Polymorph is allowed as it is a defensive spell.
Thats about as far as I’ve gotten with it so far. Any ideas and do you think it will be a playable character? I know grouping will be tough as your dps will be VERY reduced and you’ll probably have to do all content way over leveled. Let me know what you think.

that’s just an enhancement shaman.

or a paladin in a different color than yellow.

ArcLash/Lightning orb sorcerer from DiabloIv comes to mind. — the two games rip on eachothers specs enough I don’t see why they couldnt implement a mage version…although would have to be something other than nature damage, Maybe a combo of arcane & frost?

Ele/enh shammys will be salty thought.

Try Enhance shaman

I think OP is implying that he wants to play a current Mage spec rather than change an existing spec into a melee-caster.

It might be fun for a few minutes, but I think you’d get very frustrated very quickly. It will take you a long time to kill things, especially until you get access to better instants, and there would be a lot of spec disparity (e.g. Arc has AE, pom-AB, Barrage, Fire has PF, Frost has Flurry/CMS etc). It also depends on what you count as instant cast - would this include Frozen Orb, Arc Orb, Hot-streak pyro etc. If you’re in Classic, good luck with getting out of the first zone.

The only reason I could think to do this would be for a “world first” - the guy who got a Mage to max level without casting an offensive spell.
