If you played in Vanilla, what was something that stuck in your memory to this day? Something iconic of your experience?
For me, it was the first time I was camped. I was a night elf hunter named Akoto on the Dentarg server. This was early on in my career. I was in Hillsbrad on the main road headed towards the AV NPC’s. Suddenly, I was dead. The culprit? An skulled undead rogue. Not a big deal. I wait a few seconds before ressing and tried to spawn in a place I thought I could quickly shadowmeld. I spawn in, and dead. This time he kept sitting on my corpse.
This happened for 30 minutes, and I was raging. “This isn’t fair!” I thought. “This guy is bullying, and I can’t even play!” Expletives were definitely involved. I open a ticket. The response from the GM? I’m paraphrasing here, but the gist was “tough”.
That for me set up my whole perception in Vanilla: If you were Horde, I was going to try and kill you. Justice for that time I was desecrated on that cold Hillsbrad road.

one thing i remember specifically is going to the boat outside of rachet, where the pirates are and lvling my rogues lockpicking there. there was like 5 locked litle chests that didnt give much, but helped level lockpicking pretty well

It’s a good thing I’m sitting in a room with no one else because I literally laughed out loud. Thank you for that.

My best experience was when I was in Burning Steppes on my warlock. I was grinding away on leveling, and a level 60 rogue came out of stealth trying to gank me. I was 45ish at the time, I hit deathcoil and it landed. So off to the races he goes, I started casting fear and it landed i started getting excited hit him with curse of shadow and it landed.
As I am watching this rogue run around, I see him run into the lava under the bridge going to Blackrock… Game on! I spam fear him and let him run around in the lava until he dies! I then left the area as I knew I would never be able to quest in the zone while said rogue was there.

Kiting Volchan to Goldshire for the first time. I don’t remember where the idea came from, I think I was fighting it myself once and it wasn’t going well so I tried kiting, and realized he would chase me forever if I spammed curse of exhaustion. I made it to Redridge and thought “well, how far will he go?” Playing on an RP server, I loved to cause havoc in Goldshire with Infernals already, and this guy is even bigger. With a stunning AoE. Guards couldn’t handle him (they weren’t 60 either until preBC) and there weren’t many 60s hanging out there either yet. He didn’t last forever but he could wipe out the inn in one shot, with a little baiting to make him cast the AoE at me before running out of range. I eventually managed a few trips as far as Bolvar in SW or Sentinel’s Tower in westfall, but nothing had quite as much fallout as Goldshire.

Leveling an NE rogue, made it to Darkshore feeling pretty flipping great about myself. Decided to venture outside of Auberdine and was almost instantly crushed to death by Moonkins.
Leveled fishing for the afternoon, good times were had.

Captain Placeholder… The good Captain was always there in Menethil to instantly send you to the other continent whenever you liked.
Honorable mention goes to the first time I made it to the Dwarven airfield above Ironforge… I was a Tauren, we Tauren are known for our mountain climbing skills…

Kiting a lvl 40 druid across the entirety of Stonetalon Mountains on my hunter, successfully frost trapping him several times along the way only for him to catch up in travel form. I think he finally got me at the Desolace border. My heart was racing and I was so bummed that I couldn’t make it to the Desolace alliance city in time. I’m pretty sure those flame elementals slowed me down.
Being camped by the Horde in Vanilla most definitely inspired my absolute loathing for most of the Horde, for sure.
One moment that really stuck out to me, however, was actually a lot more tame, and somewhat surreal. I was leveling in Stranglethorn, and I went across the bridge that connects the shores on either side of the river near Nesingwary’s camp, and I remember stopping halfway across and listening to all the ambient noise.
It was the first moment I really felt immersed in something so thoroughly, like it was an actual jungle. Was pretty wild, even if it is tame.

The first time I saw Ragnaros appear before my eyes…It was the rewards for all my efforts I did up until then.
He was so huge! So powerful! I can still re-live the moment in my head.
BY FIRE BE PURGED!

I’ve also been excited a lot in AV and when I’ve randomly found a blue dagger in a chest in Arathie Highland. The joy was real. Oh yeah not to mention the Krol Blade I’ve found on a random bear that I’ve aggroed by mistake that I almost did not looted. Since that very moment, I’ve always looted all my kills!
Now I get a titanforged 420 ilvl and I’m like…“Meh…cool…”

I remember leveling my first hunter to 15 then logging out for a couple months. Came back amd decided to start a new hunter, hit 30, logged out for a few months, came back again, made new hunter, hit 30 again logged out.
This process continued into TBC where i would keep making new hunters over and over until finally i had my first max level toon (a paladin lol) in WOTLK. I was in college during that time so it was hard for me to play, but i always enjoy going and looking at all the different hunters i made that never hit max level.

Had ton of good BG and open world memories.
One I won’t forget:
There I was, my stealthed orc rogue the only thing between the alliance flag carrier and their tunnel to victory. It was a pink-haired gnome warrior–the tank of a raiding guild and she was surrounded by her guildmates.
I was in my 40s and specc’d combat maces.
I stopped her with a cheap shot, popped AR and while her stunned pve mates watched in horror, stripped her of life, pride and victory.
A few of her mates began to finally react, but I had evasion up by then, and in their frenzied midst was able to grab and return the flag.
Finally falling to their concerted wrath, with my dying breath I just had time to click the dead gnome’s corpse (she was still targeting me…watching and no doubt cursing her team) and type /lol.

A few.
First time I ever flew into Ironforge. The way the tunnel opens up into the forge, with the lava lake, molten ore falling down, and the french horns kick in. Epic.
Rolled my first toon on a PvP server (Thunderlord), and one of our favorite world PvP activities was to raid Menethil in pirate hats and seize the boats. It became a thing on the server: Boat Warz (yes, with a zed). Want your boats back, Alliance scum? Come and get them.

I was taking a flight path from Org to Gadget in Tanaris. I had gotten my character really drunk for whatever reason. Back then (as I recall that FP took like 10-15 mins) so I went afk to get a drink and some food. I came back and I had drowned off the coast and was stuck underwater inside a ship. Apparently my drunk character affected flight path routing.
Also falling off the elevator in that zone south of barrens as a ghost would level your defense skill.
There were many,

Downing Rags one of the first times (not the first though) when one of our mages blinked/ran into melee range and iceblocked after all the tanks/melee were dead to keep Rags from 1-shotting the rest of the ranged because he counted as being in melee range. It kept Rags off of the ranged just long enough to get him down and prevented a less than 1% wipe.

4 manning a good portion of Scholo one night with some PVP friends. It was myself, mage, hunter, and priest. We didn’t finish it but we had a blast.
