An Evergreen Pet Battle

The main piece of pet content I want is:

  1. A Tamer,
  2. located somewhere convenient and central for everyone, like Legion Dalaran,
  3. who selects three random pets each day,
  4. with an unpredictable pet order, moveset, and move-order for each pet for each attempt.

I love the Puzzle aspect of pet battles: HOW do I beat this set-up?

I get that Puzzle hit once or twice per expansion, when new Family achievements come out. That’s it. Every other day is just re-doing battles mindlessly. Many people bot them (within the ToS) with Scripts. It’s something to do, but not a ton of fun.

Having one of the Tamer’s pets be Epic would be nice.

Having a move timer like PvP would be nice.

Having distinctive rewards, like a pet for 30 daily wins, would be nice.

These would all be nice-to-haves, but my central want is to have a new puzzle each day that isn’t already solved.

Thoughts?

I would be surprised if enough pet battlers felt the same way about having to crack a new nut every day to make it a worthwhile development target for the devs.

I’m not sold on having a new random Pet Battle every day. Collection size and PB knowledge varies widely, which will limit who can participate in something that’s around for such a brief amount of time. Only the most dedicated and/or those with plenty of time will be able to fully appreciate a daily random Pet Battle PVE encounter. So maybe every 2-3 days? Or as a weekly?

Also, what happens when one of the random encounters is ultimately “unbeatable”? (unless you have very, very specific breeds and pets or very good RNG) Would that be a feature or a bug? Would players just have to throw in the towel and skip/miss out on it for that day?

And if there were rewards for every 30 daily wins, I would hope that it’s not consecutive days for the reason noted above.

I well understand that not everybody would be able to, or want to, tackle such a battle every day. OTOH, the devs have so expanded the range of what new battlers can do by giving Level 25s so quickly, and allowing Level 1s to complete World Quests, that I can’t think it would hurt to give some activity for people who have developed their rosters, and familiarity with those rosters.

It’s an interesting question whether a day could even be unbeatable. Pick any three Level 25 Blues - can you imagine a team that couldn’t beat it? I don’t believe there are any unbeatable teams (and if there are, do please whisper it to me! :stuck_out_tongue: ) Once you know the three pets, it’s not hard to put a counter together.

My suggestion for a reward is pretty much off the top of my head, but I was thinking of a currency earned for beating that tamer each day, so definitely not 30 days in a row.

P.S. As an example, every time there’s a Family battle that comes out, I start by making a generic team for each Family, then I try the battle. Rarely do I have to try any Family more than three times. (Yes, there are exceptions, and a few of them can be DOOZIES  but the vast majority go down easily enough.)

Not a bad idea. Reminds me of the tamer that occasionally appears in the Garrison with a randomized set of pets (from a limited set of options).

I would do it once. I probably wouldn’t do it daily or weekly.

I do feel one of the largest drawbacks to the pets system is that you can just look up the answer to every fight. Which I think most people probably do now before even trying the fight once themselves.

For a large proportion of the wow pet battle population, your “drawback” is a non-negotiable requirement.

I don’t need more hard work in my life.

Yes, when Kira and Erris appeared, I had hopes they might provide some sort of endgame for PvE. But they didn’t. :frowning:
