AMD + Intel HD -- Switchable Graphics Optimization issues

I am having issues since 8.1 … In My Catalyst Control Center, under Power > Switchable Graphics … I always have wow on High Performance. This forces wow to use my AMD Graphics card, which gives me good frame rates, I can run the game on mid range settings, and it performs well.

Since 8.1 … when I start the game, it says Game Started, the mouse vanishes. If I Tab out, I can see the game is trying to load. But it sits there, for nearly 10 min before starting. If I try to go to Display Settings, the game crashes.

When I go into Catalyst Control Center, and select Power Saving, it starts instantly. When I go to Display Settings, Advanced, My high performance AMD card is not showing at all in the settings. Only my Garbage Intel Card shows. The Intel Card is for windows and browsers, its bad. The AMD is the Gaming Card, its intended for 3D games. This Optimization setting in Catalyst Control center is how I tell the system which game uses which card.

I dont know whats changed, but at this point waiting 10 min every time I start the game is insane. What is happening, what the heck did you guys change.

Lets first try updating your Intel GPU drivers.

read through this article on how to do it
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005474/graphics-drivers.html?_ga=2.82231958.1006483432.1544601074-896815851.1544601074

this is the link to the drivers for your Integrated GPU
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28164/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-15-33-?product=80939

This has torched my computer before. I don’t trust any driver’s not specifically for my laptop and have been approved by them. Pulling driver’s off Intel’s site has broken my laptop in the past. I am intently curious why you want me to mess with the drivers that are loading fine though … The AMD switchable graphics are the ones taking forever to load up since 8.1.
… The Intel chip is not for 3D at all.

I can check the Inspiron driver list to see if any new approved OEM driver versions exist. I would not trust just dropping the newest retail Intel driver’s on my machine. Like I said done that… Spent two weeks trying to roll things back just to get the machine to boot properly.

The Intel Driver is what controls the Switchable graphics. Updating the Dedicated GPU without updating the intel side can cause issues.

Its also set to balanced the Dedicated GPU may not work with it set to balanced

I’m having the same issue. Or very similar at least. Game takes 5-10 minutes to load and whenever I go to settings, If I’m logged in game stops responding for about 5 minutes and disconnects me once it comes back to its senses, or if I click setting from the log in screen it’s just not responding for 5 minutes.
Tried it before and after updating amd drivers, same result. Checked dell website and that command update program I have for new intel drivers and there’s nothing new available, so everything is up to date. Even updated my bios just to see if it does anything.
I’m fairly certain that game is indeed using dedicated GPU, as playability wasn’t affected all that much, except for some occasional fps drops that didn’t occure before patch.
Also, my battery settings are in quality mode rather than balanced, which means that it does not take any part in this issue.
Seeing how both author and me are using dx11( in my case I can’t even run dx12 cause windows 7), and had no changes in our hardware/software whatsoever at least on first launch after patch dropped, I can’t imagine this issue being caused by something on our end.
Would be nice to have a reply from blues, as indeed waiting that long for game to launch is rather frustrating.

Keep bumping our post here Cant open game after 8.1 - #29 by Antisôcial-kiljaeden

Your intel drivers are from 2012. That’s so far out of date they might as well need museum pieces. The issue with those not having never versions is your laptop manufacturer.

here’s mine : Driver Date/Size: 4/26/2018 16:29:14, 25375224 bytes.
We’re having the exact same issue, so it’s safe to assume it’s not even caused by drivers being out of date.

I will attempt to see what I can do to update them. It’s really destroyed my system before. This was all working perfectly before 8.1 … ugh. Also how do I change it from Balanced to anything else? This is not something I have ever seen before. Ill look it up I guess, I just know the Catalyst Controls that allow me to set which GPU is used for which program.

This is the thing I am worried about, I will end up spending days trying to re-wire my Laptop, and it will end up doing nothing but causing me a headache. Something about WoW is doing this. Every other game I have runs fine. And its only started this madness since 8.1

The Damn Bitcoin crap has jacked up the prices of Video cards since about then… I haven’t been able to afford any kind of upgrade because even the lamest crap Laptop is way out of my budget. Maybe with Bitcoin crashing, the prices will drop and I can afford a laptop upgrade again. I just know the AMD chip I have is good enough to run the game with 30-50 fps. That’s all I need, If I can get wow.exe to stop being stupid.

I have also seen several threads that this is an issue across the board for a lot of people with dual GPU’s. Some are AMD/Intel … some are nVidea/Intel … Whatever Blizzard did recently has broken the game for a lot of people.

Any blue response to this would be nice.

Putting this here to try tonight.

Go to windows Power Options → Select the plan you want (Balance, High Performance) → Change Plan Settings → set the Intel(R) Graphic Settings to Maximum Performance → scroll down to Switchable Dynamic Graphic → Global Settings → and select Maximum Performance. Now your AMD Radeon will kick in every time there is a rendering operation. See if ti solves your issue

Tried that last thing, turns out everything was already set to maximum performance, so certainly nothing to fix there for me.
Did you try it yet?

The wow.exe has moved. Have you checked to make sure the graphics switching software is looking in the new location for the exe file?

Even though it somehow found it on its own earlier, I did just in case point it to a new location, so nothing changed unfortunately. I tried playing it on dedicated and integrated, and I’m sure it’s using dedicated gpu once in game, but it looks as if it takes 10 minutes for gpu to actually establish connection to the game, it works properly afterwards. Except for system settings of course, opening them takes 5 minutes of not responding, applying changes takes about the same amount of time, and it makes no sense at all to be honest. I can understand how there might be something messing up the initial launch, but opening settings? That’s just some paranormal activity going on there.

Yeah Ive tried everything. I tried the -d3d11 command line just in case it was automatically swapping to DirectX12 automatically like the patch notes say. I am wondering if for some reason the code that swaps to DX12 is confused by the hardware switching. Like it boots in D12 because of the AMD chip taking over… but the automatic detection is looking at the wrong card when it boots? … I have some feeling this automatic stuff is busting the swapping graphics mechanism.

gx.log should show which graphics card the automatic detection uses.

Also , in game , what graphics card is it set to in ESC -> System -> Advanced ?

I recently read in a post that the system menu will actually load after another 10 min wait. So I will let it do the crazy 10 min blackscreen, and when it loads Ill check the settings, and let it blackscreen for another 10 min, then Ill let you know what it says. Also ill check the gx.log and see what it says.

Ok after it finishes loading the GX.LOG says:

Trying the system menu now. Its going to be a bit…

Now this is super interesting… once I opened it. I found it was set to the Intel chip, I had done that yesterday testing. I set it to Auto Detect… NOW… the listed card does not look right at all…

So I see whats going on here, wow is fighting with the driver controls… It forces the system to use the Intel Chip, but only after my system is struggling like hell to force it to use the AMD chip.

It should be showing a device of
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_682F&SUBSYS_05721028&REV_00
What is wierd is adapter 0 SHOULD be the AMD card. As far as I can tell its showing as PCI bus 0, device 2, function 0

the amd card is showing as PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0

Yeah that is weird.

Don’t throw things at me if you’ve posted this before but … is the AMD card showing up in Device Manager ?

My research on “Inspiron 7520 AMD Card not showing up in dxdiag” is telling me it should at least show up in Device Manager.

It’s also telling me that NO do not use the generic AMD drivers. You must use the ones from the Dell website.

Also -

https://www.dell.com/community/Laptops-General-Read-Only/AMD-Graphics-Card-not-getting-detected/td-p/4128836

Is suggesting there is a specific order in which to install the drivers

Chipset drivers → Intel Drivers (from Dell’s site) → AMD drivers (from Dell’s site)

I’m noticing that at -

https://www.dell.com/support/home/nz/en/nzdhs1/product-support/product/precision-15-7520-laptop/drivers

There’s a few updated drivers. Ones from this year. Again apologies if you’ve gone down this route as well.

2 other questions I just thought of (again apologies if you’ve stated this and I’ve misread)

  • Is the switching not happening in other games ?
  • Is your BIOS drivers up to date ?

Thanks for trying to help us.
I did a little research on how this thing works, and while I found nothing official, some people did point out that even though graphic card used is displayed as integrated one, games usually utilise dedicated one. As far as I understood, the system goes relatively directly to integrated gpu, and integrated in turn goes to dedicated one, thus, since process inevitably goes through integrated, that would make sense why dedicated is not displayed in games.
Ever since I started playing wow on my laptop (October 2017), In game the only options I had in that gpu drop down menu is automatic detection (or whatever it’s called) and my intel integrated gpu. Same thing with overwatch, although I have a feeling that once upon a time (actually when I installed overwatch during last free week), it actually displayed my amd there, unless my mind made it up.
I have tried playing both games on both integrated and dedicated focus, and the difference is huge. Overwatch is pretty much unplayable on my integrated, while wow loses 15-20 FPS on it. So I am completely certain that amd works.
I tried launching wow on integrated and dedicated yesterday, to see if there’s anything different going on in those logs, and as it turns out, whatever events, hardware or else is shown in logs is completely identical whatever I run the game on. Exception is the loading time of course.
As you can see in Concequence’s log, there is an approximately 2 minutes gap between d3d11 creation and next process, as well as 2m gap later on. Those gaps are not present when launching with integrated gpu, but are there each time I launch the game with dedicated. And yeah, our systems are different, even though both are dell-intel+amd, but those times are not that different, with difference perhaps being within 10sec range. And you can also see that gap between first event in gx log and Initialisation in client log is 7 minutes 10ish seconds. I relaunched game 2 times yesterday, and both times that gap was also in 6:50 - 7:10 range.
I hope those things can help somehow.
As for BIOS, I did install the latest update, and unfortunately It made no difference.

It is showing in the Device Manager.

Switching does happen in other games, and was happening until 8.1 … Also if I manually change the Card that the Catalyst Control center uses for wow… it loads quickly, but the performance is terrible. I updated my BIOS just over the past couple days. I have gone through the Dell Support Tool, and updated every available driver.

The “order” thing is possible. I will read that article. I had a VERY similar issue originally with My SteamCast… I had to go into the very advanced Video settings to set it to do the video optimizations correctly. This whole switchable graphics is super confusing, having two video cards is not something I had to deal with before this Laptop…

After looking down in the that thread you posted, I’m going to install the AMD monitor… It implies that some games just wont detect the AMD card, and that there is no physical MUX, that the Intel card shows as the display adapter, but the AMD card is what is used. SO its entirely possible the AMD card IS doing the rendering. Which is going to make this even more complicated to detect whats happening.

Ill install that and see what is being used when I let wow sit for 8-10 min, on start with it set to High Performance.

Again you are a big help so far. I hope Blizz is watching this post, I feel like this is the most helpful post in the forum on this.

Thanks for the backup on this Ligeya, I see the same drop in FPS. Also I can feel my AMD chip’s heat when its using that chip. (its directly under my palm lol) … Im still going to install the AMD monitor later so I can see utilization. I really wonder what is happening during those Gaps in the log, where it seems to be doing nothing.

Is there a command line option to make more detailed logs? Id love to see whats happening in those gaps.
