I believe sunk cost fallacy is the reason they aren’t reverting to some of the classic animations and sounds.
“Well our animations and fx teams worked really hard on the new Subtlety animations we don’t want to just throw them out”
With that said, a bunch of players really hate it and feel strongly that it ruined the feel of the class. I know I feel that way. It’s a total turn off for me that prevents me from enjoying the game. This is simply NOT my Rogue, it’s nothing at all like my Rogue.
So how about a compromise: Blizzard reverts to the old animations and aesthetics by default, but creates a minor glyph “Glyph of the Shadows” that allows Legion baby nu-Rogues who actually liked this gaudy, hamfisted trash to opt back into it.
There was something very direct, crisp and clean about the other animations. It wasn’t over the top. I loved how unless you knew the sounds or animations, you wouldn’t know why you were losing health.
Now it’s SUPER obvious which skills hurt. . . Or supposed to hurt since ambush doesn’t really do too much damage. . . Very not rogue like.
Still happy that we atleast got Slice back, just to press the ability again as Sub would be amazing. Sub currently in Alpha has gone a long way in the positive direction but its still got a long way to go
Man, I wish they would just give us old positional backstab and hemo instead of blending them both into the current “backstab”, they should rename it to backrub instead . (Because it doesn’t do damage)
I get why on an abstract, general level they wanted to make animations and sounds very over the top.
I think that’s the right approach for many classes. I think it’s exactly the wrong approach to the Rogue class, for reasons that should be OBVIOUS.
I think so much of the awful state we are in is due to Blizzard taking ideas that sound good on paper and might make sense for many classes or spces, but trying to force them on our class or spec when it isn’t the right fit.
I agree whole-hardheartedly with that. It really, REALLY doesn’t feel rogue like.
Also, now that I’m thinking about it. . . This is really off-topic, but why haven’t they banned ranged stuns and ranged kicks for non-ranged classes? I think they all should be melee range. :’)
Agreed 100%. The distinctions were super important and interesting:
Backstab is always more damage than Hemo during Find Weakness
When FW is down, Hemo is worth using a single time only to apply the small bleed
The bleed from it is also useful for control, denying restealths. Huge part of Rogue v Rogue matches.
Hemo also had a lower energy cost and was therefore faster for quickly generating combo points. If you weren’t going for a kill or for pressure right now, you could choose to Hemo instead to build combo points more quickly.
Not only would bringing back the old combination of Backstab / Hemo bring back all of that depth, it would also solve a massive problem of the new Backstab design, which is that the player doesn’t receive any feedback on when they are getting the bonus damage. Backstab being ONLY usable from behind was much better for this reason.
I haven’t liked any of the new sounds or visual effects for rogues I find it super hard to know what’s going on when everything’s over the top. I’d be happy to have the old ones back.
I’m fine with HoJ, Mind Freeze, etc. These are classic buttons. But there has been too much proliferation of ranged stuns. Between The Eyes was always a terrible idea, Kidney Shot was perfect and of course super iconic, and Rogue is never a class that should have had a ranged stun.
Stormbolt is another example that I’m fine with though, just because it had the travel time so you could see it coming and react – it wasn’t instant. But I do believe HoJ should be the ONLY instant, ranged stun, it should be one of the biggest unique strengths of the paladin class.
Anyway, don’t want to get too off topic here. We are really discussing animations and sounds after all.
Each time I see the unholy DK pet do the green, old kidney animation, I get sad on the inside haha. I’m unsure why they just don’t allow glyphs for old animations, if they want to keep their work. However, the ambush rn needs to go 100%.
