I am torn on the subject. Amber certainly deserved better - but that fact is what gives the story around her death its punch.
Ultimately, I think this is a storytelling device that is very useful in the game, and I do think it should be used even if (or especially because) it hurts - though it needs to be done sparingly and the story around it needs to be serious and well-written, or else it just teaches the playerbase to stop caring at all about the setting’s characters.
