I get that WoW is for kids blah blah (ACKTCHUALLY it was for teens/adults back when oldschool devs with a pair ran things).
Anyways this is the first expansion where the writing (and not class balance) is driving me off, to the point where I just spent the past 10 minutes trying to find a way to skip the campaign (only to find out it’s for alts only
Everything is so overly goofy and bright … it’s just so dumb it literally makes me feel uncomfortable like I shouldn’t be participating in something so child-like. Doesn’t feel like WoW’s for adults, let alone even teens anymore. Definitely not the cool place to be, but it was fun for a good long while. Now it’s just awkward.
Did I get too old for WoW or is WoW too immature for adults?
I turn 40 in July; been playing since 2005. I still really enjoy the game; some of it is silly, but it has always silliness in it. I don’t take it too seriously and find it really enjoyable.
Honestly, it seems like a lot of degen systems exist in today’s game more than past version; from anti-addiction hooks to succubuses with clothes on, the game has slowly become less “graphic” and more “novel”.
Story would be better with more comic writers, like the legion arcs, than by hiring uninspired young adult fantasy writers.
There are whole guilds on numerous servers dedicated to those over retirement age. As of this posting, the oldest I’ve grouped with was 93 who I actually met up with at a Gamecon.
You have decided a ‘bright’ video game art style equals ‘goofy’ and ‘dumb’ and ‘immature’ and ‘child-like’. Don’t worry, if you continue to mature (your use of the phrase ‘not the cool place to be’ unironically clearly indicating you have a long way to go) you will grow out of it.
I don’t think it’s your age, I think it’s your personal perception. If you aren’t enjoying the content, maybe you could try Classic? Might be good for a break and a different perspective. Personally, I could LIVE in Ardenweald. I wish I could have gone there sooner and skipped Maldraxxis entirely. Maldraxxis was so depressing to play through for me.
*Edit: The environment is absolutely stunning, even in the “ugly” places. I haven’t been this impressed with the world building since Wrath. I used to fly around with my other druid in raven form in that expansion just for the scenery and music. Kudos to Blizzard for creating such beauty.
