I’ve played both and in my experience have seen this more from horde players towards alliance. I’m not asserting it’s objectively true that horde do this more, just that it’s been my experience. I’m certain others, like you, have had opposite experiences.
I imagine we can at least agree it’s straight up weird when we see folks apply in-game faction pride or hate towards actual people, lol.
Everyone likes what they like. Some people hate Horde some people hate Alliance. Some people like to pretend to hate the other faction for RP purposes but in reality realize that we all play the same game.
For example, I don’t actually think Alliance players are the scum of the earth genocidal racists, or that Garrosh was actually the best leader the Horde ever had. But it’s so much more fun to RP that way to get that little bit more from the experience.
All in all I think that 95% of Alli players are stand up people who enjoy the same game I do (Then there are the people who camp The Maw, but both sides pull that kind of crap). However, I could never play Alliance because I find their Goody Two-shoes demeanor and European Castle aesthetic to be so boring.
I would have loved to be alliance if I could. But finding a decent guild and getting aotc/ksm over there are much more uphill battles than they need to be.
Thankfully, at Blizzcon Ion acknowledged the problem and they’re trying to think of… something.
I think it’s silly to hate something to that degree, personally. I hate the Alliance, but it’s playful hate. It’s like me, as a New Yorker, saying I hate New Jersey. It’s a joke.
I play both factions and think playing both factions will enrich someone’s understanding of the universe, and let them see another side of the game.
I can relate to this entirely. The horde just seems unapologetically evil, especially the undead. I just don’t like playing evil. I want to defeat it and feel like a big hero.
I really liked the Horde in Warcraft III. But even the transition from WCIII to WoW really changed them. I can’t say I “hate” the Horde, but they’re not nearly as cool as they once were, no matter how hard the developers want to beat their chests about it.
I picked Horde in part because I wanted to play the good guys, and by the end of WC3, it was pretty obvious that meant Horde, not Alliance.
The Horde managed to keep that trophy all the way up until Cata, at which point Bliz started shoving the pendulum the other way.
My personal conspiracy theory is that part of the reason Bliz has been spending multiple expansions trying to make the Horde reprehensible villains has not just been to satisfy the PVP crowd, but as an attempt to fix the faction imbalance by making people want to play Alliance to be the good guys.
They forgot however both how much people don’t play MMOs for the RPG component, and how many edgelords exist.
I’m not really sure how you came to that conclusion, though, considering the Alliance in Warcraft III became part of the Horde in WoW. In fact, due to much of the changes that Blizzard made over the course of WoW, it retroactively practically made Warcraft III into “Warcraft: The Horde”, as almost every playable group aside from the Night Elves, became Horde.
The Alliance in WoW was barely represented in Warcraft III, and those bits that were were also changed fairly radically in the conversion from WCIII to WoW.
Not saying that you can’t have felt that the Horde (at least the Tauren, Orcs, and Trolls) were “good guys” at the time, of course. Just that there was practically no real context to make WoW’s Alliance any type of “bad guy” at all.
A lot of the Horde being evil I pin on the “muh faction war” dingalings. It seems that Blizzard can’t really write a faction war without making one out to be evil when other methods could be used: like “civilization” vs. “wild” or tradition vs. moving ahead, or even outcasts vs. society.
I guess i’m the opposite (made a very embarassing post about my allegiance to the horde in the past haha) I can’t get into the Alliance though i’ve tried playing it a few times. If I were to play Ally though Dwarves are awesome, maybe one day I’ll roll one.
I had a similar issue. I have actually been horde for years. My love for the game was starting to fade and I just couldn’t put my finger on why things were feeling so Bland. My friends talked me into trying out Alliance and it completely rejuvenated my love for the game.
I have always looked upon the alliance cities and zones With Envy. They were always so much more Scenic than anything The Horde got. So I faction changed to Alliance and it’s one of the best decision I’ve ever made. The people I have encountered on Alliance are far less toxic and just seem more relaxed
For the last year or so I was just kind of rolling with the motion of the ocean as horde.
Maybe it’s because I’m really enjoying the aesthetics of alliance but I’m actually having fun in the game again. It’s a joy discovering the races on Alliance and the stories behind them. Not to mention that people just seem more friendly on Alliance. I would recommend doing what I did and making a free trial toon that’s Alliance and playing it for a bit. If you don’t like it you are out nothing
