To start off it seems it’s necessary to clarify that I am not calling into question the current state of the demon hunter class, nor do I want to have any argument of the sort, it all devolves into name calling and hate jerking so none of that pls.
The question I wanted to ask is more of a personal one, and to ask if anyone has had the same feeling. I’ve mained demon hunter since legion, playing both vengeance and havoc, every time I attempt to change class (save for holy pally as my healing fix) I always end up back on my demon hunter. Recently a problem that has bugged me my whole demon hunter career seems to have become more noticeable, and I wanted to ask any other dh’s whether they feel the same since it is a problem I have with the level of connection I have with my abilities, which is a problem I’m weirdly specific about in all games. When I play vengeance it feels almost like the buttons I press and the actions I input are disconnected from the actual damage and abilities being preformed by my character. To explain, on Prot Pally for example, the abilities I cast feel directly tied to the damage an enemy takes, eg. when an enemy is in consecrate they take damage, when you hit an enemy with crusader strike while in conc. they take damage then radiate that damage out to other nearby enemies, when you cast avengers shield it goes thunk thunk thunk to each enemy it hits. A feeling of connection as you would get in an over the shoulder game, one click equals one swing of your weapon. However with vengeance, it feels like I’m in control of the order of my actions, but I’m not the actually one whos executing them. The main method of passive aoe you have is just that, passive, its an aura that ticks reliably for small damage blah blah blah, that’s all fine I like immolation aura but its not the most satisfying. Soul bomb however is your main actual soul shard spender, and it eats the soul shards then explodes a second later, which feels very strange to use since it has nothing to do with your big fat glaives, and when it does go off its so far from the actual press it feels like the damage the enemy took was incidental. For example Blood boil on a dk happens instantly and the damage dealt to enemies feels like it came from the explosion that just happened, but with soul bomb it feels like a trinket procing not an ability being used. Then soul cleave, which you don’t even use much to my dismay, hardly ever even has a sound/hit effect. Soul cleave often will just whiff through the air making no noise and not connecting with the enemy, then deal its damage a second later as though it lagged or something. Since you have immo aura dealing ticks constantly it becomes hard to even tell which bit of damaged was caused by you hitting them with your big a** chunks of metal. It makes it genuinely harder for me to tank when I cant tell if my abilities are even connecting or not, it feels like driving a submarine, where you’re reading off data from a screen and then doing calculations and imputing it back into the computer, then the computer does the maneuver you just told it to, you dont actually get to see anything.
This is a long winded complaint about something that literally probably only matters to me, so feel free to ignore this thread. I just kind of want confirmation that other DH players feel this way, and If they don’t I want to know that so I can re-evaluate the way I play because I must be doing something wrong. I’m always way too picky about the feeling of connection to your actions in video games, so feel free to ignore me since I’m most likely a crazy person. I was just bored and decided to write this little thread for maybe a little closure, and since I didn’t have anything better to do.
Either way thanks for reading this if you did.
You might drink too much coffee.
ADHDs a hell of a drug man
Please use paragraphs.
I get what you mean, havoc feels visceral, but vengeance feels like the damage comes from a disembodied source while my character flails his arms.
…wow… Coffee and ADHD jokes are all you have for an honest inquiry.
Well, salute to you two.
To the OP; I have a similar dis-associatikn when I play vengeance in particular; especially given the sigil heavy game play it encourages.
I recall listening to a 3d graphics design artist discuss the idea of fighting animations needing to have “weight” and “gravity” to the fighting movements animated in various scenes.
Thinking back; I also recall someone speaking about the Manga Artist who draws/writes the Berserk series; and goes into detail how difficult it is to really demstrate the impact of his sword 'The Dragon Slayer"
I think vengeance has a weaker presence from the player perspective.
Lately arms warriors have been saying the opposite, so it may be cool to play around with a trial character and take a look at what they did, and it may give you a way to articulate some suggestions in the future.
In the mean time get used to the point-and-click style vengeance that’s performing in quite well in function and theory.
Osu!
Lol the adhd joke was me, but thanks for the concise response. I’m glad im not the only one who feels this way, most likely its just that vengeance has never been my ideal play style and I think I need to accept that after all these years of trying to make it. Its just difficult to swap to another class for tanking when its so convienient to have both on one character XD, I think Ill swallow my pride and lvl up my old prot pally soon.
Honestly I feel the same way. I tried out Vengeance and constantly had to look at my bars to make sure my cooldowns were being used when I was pressing buttons because it just looks like you’re not doing…anything really. Press Spirit bomb and I can watch the soul shards disappear if there’s not too much other stuff on the screen but that’s it. It feels really weird and almost gives a sense of “I’m not actually doing anything, am I doing something?” I constantly had to ask my friend if I was tanking despite the fact that I clearly knew the enemies were hitting me and not others. It’s very very weird.
I’ve noticed this issue a lot with my claws in Meta. Like I’ll see my big demon guns swinging and those finger knives clawing at the enemy, but there’s no sound, no feedback at all. It always makes me doubletake to make sure Fracture isn’t on CD or something.
I’d say Vengeance definitely needs some readability tuning.
Yes spirit bomb does feel weird. It’s like you click the ability then wonder what’s happening then a small fizzle and the enemies take some damage and you wonder was that it? It’s like a disappointing firework.
