Am i doing something wrong?

I find myself under-level in zones, unable to do the quests even in low level areas. I know vanilla didnt have enough quests and more had to be added later, but i thought i would be dealing with that farther into leveling (40-60). Is it normal to just have to grind mobs even at the low teens?

Are you staying only in one general race area? For example, if you are playing undead, are you only staying in the undead area? If you venture into the orc zones, you will have a lot more quests.

With this human rogue, I leveled both in the human zones and also the dwarf zones. Doing that plus some instances, you should have plenty of quests in zones of your level.

No, i am doing quest in multiple zones. Currently lvl 16 and i hit Redridge, Loch Modan, and Westfall. I did leave the nelf starting area to level in elwynn forest if that makes a difference. But all my quests for those locations are beyond what i can handle as a solo warrior. But perhaps thats just it, as a warrior it may be too difficult to solo.

Go to Darkshore, too.

No problem. I’ve just been hopping between Darkshore and Westfall and have been fine. I barely touched Loch Modan and haven’t even seen Redridge yet. Darkshore has a lot of quests!

I also grind a lot, though. Cloth and skinning.

Warriors feel pretty bad at solo questing until ~20 or so. Yellow quests are a nightmare.

Try to upgrade your weapon if you can…it makes a HUGE difference. You can sometimes find low level greens on the AH for close to vendor price, so it’s almost a wash on spending the silver.

Ya ive noticed some ppl even sell items for less than their vendor price. So thats a good point.

yea warriors are neck and neck with the slowest levelers.
Grab a healer in those lower levels.

Vanilla was designed in such a way that the exp from all the quests in a certain area isn’t enough to give you 5 levels. There are always multiple areas with the same level range. Go quest in those.

Ive done okay with just barrens and some stonetalon (obviously horde) but…

All the guides say it, but grind on mobs between quests… and when i say grind, i mean Anything worth exp that it tab range, not just things that happen to aggro…

But, tbh, style differs… as long as you’re having a reasonable amount of fun with any particular method; you’re doing it right.

Can’t comment specifically about Alliance because I’ve always played Horde, but I am leveling a warrior, too, prot specced no less, because I love to run all the instances and I just prefer the durabity of sword and board, plus I like to level as the spec I will play endgame. I’m weird like that. But anyway, I have always refused to grind mobs. I like to only do quests and run each instance once (for the quests). As a warrior, I also find it more efficient and painless to do green quests when possible. I have managed to level this toon to 31 doing almost ENTIRELY green quests. Here’s my strat…

I did all THREE starting zones, skipping only the very early newbie quests that were already grey. Then Silverpine, then Barrens.

Every time I get high enough level for the next instance, I gather ALL the quests for it and run it. You gain roughly a level each dungeon run if you do all the quests and it’s nice gear rewards. And there is a new instance roughly every few levels.

I have an addon that shows quest level, and I focus on lowest level quests first. If my quest log gets full, I drop the highest level quests and write them down so I can come back for them later. Whenever I start running out of green quests, I go to the next highest level new zone and do all the green quests there. Then I go back to prior zones and do all the ones that have since turned green. Repeat.

You get FULL XP for doing quests 5 levels or fewer than your own level, so I try to get them done before I reach 6+ levels above.

Leveling has gone very smooth and has been a blast.

Also, don’t be afraid to sword and board really early. I had a 1h ~8DPS vs a 11DPS 2h and I found the 1h + shield to be faster overall. As you get more abilities/talents I think the gap widens pretty quickly though

Try to group up, especially for quests like “kill 20 harvest watchers” a group of 5 will breeze through and you get reward upgrades to help solo better

I recommend quests with atrocious drop rates. Lots of people drop those out of frustration, but you tend to get a lot of farming xp to add to that sweet quest xp.

I rarely have to stop and eat going sword and board. I’ve probably used a grand total of 30-40 food and zero bandages in 31 levels. That makes up for a significant amount of the slower kill time and also saves a lot of silver over time because you’re not buying much food and can sell all the cloth you get. Plus fewer deaths and runbacks because you’re more durable.

I run dungeons to Make up for lack of quest XP in a given zone, for me it’s better than running all over the place for quests.

This is an excellent comment.

People underestimate the value of the XP you get from kills while doing such quests.

Grind, or go to another newbie area.

And Darkshore is a HUGE zone too. You’re walking forever there. I never liked questing there.
