I’m leveling my Rogue alt and he’s built for tanking. I have all the tanking runes including Shuriken Toss, and I struggle to keep aggro. I usually cast Shuriken Toss twice into a pack and then follow up with Main Gauche for 5 CP’s and then use Blade Dance. I even use Blade Flurry on cooldown and it’s still not enough to hold aggro on packs. Even using Sinister Strike takes a good 3 or 4 hits, and if anyone pulls decent dps, I just cannot pull aggro off of them. I taunt, but that’s a 10 second cooldown and they just rip aggro off of me again.
Am I doing something wrong? Or do Rogue tanks just completely stink at holding aggro?
For dungeons pop Adrenaline rush on your first pull and once you have dps secured you pull more while the dps are mopping up, You just need to be 1 or 2 rotations ahead of the dps to secure enough threat that they are 90% dead by the time they are pulled off.
You aren’t dps anymore, don’t stay for the killing blow stay ahead of the group instead. Keep an eye on mana because the mages will cry bloody murder if you don’t let them drink and stagger your pulls so you’re not dragging enemies out of aoe.
The problem isn’t just Sinister Strike. Our only AoE attack is Shuriken Toss and no matter how hard I try, I just cannot hold aggro at all. Although Mutilate would probably work better for single target. I just wish they would increase our threat more because it’s a huge pain keeping aggro. I don’t have this issue on my Druid, and he’s a few levels lower than my Rogue.
Rogues dont really have any aoe threat.
But on 1 v 1 pretty sure you should be fine to keep threat, like on bosses. For the rest the group must learn to refrain their aoe.
I was playing fire mage and the tank was warrior and even him had issues with aoe threat. I think only shaman and paly have 0 issue to aoe threat.
I joined the Rogue Discord and they suggested that I do smaller pulls of 2 or 3 mobs max. It seems that Rogue really needs some help. I hope Blizzard considers buffing our AoE threat or giving us more skills to help.
Run with smarter dps. As a dps you aoe when it is safe to not when the mobs are in melee range of the tank for .05 seconds. As a tank your concern is keep aggro of the healer. Dps pull aggro, mobs will come back when the dps die .
None of the Vanilla tanking classes had the full kit. You either had AoE threat and no snap threat (paladins) or you had snap and sustained threat with precious few AoE options.
Paladin tanks in their current form are a mistake, and we don’t need to move further in that direction by trivializing even more class’ tanking experience.
