The entity known as Aluneth, which possess the eponymous staff, is pretty interesting to me. It is an arcane entity from an unknown realm, bound to the staff. We still don’t know where it comes from, even with our current knowledge of the cosmology. I want it return, like Xal’atath, for it to be expanded upon.
I think he’s an Arcane Lord, his whispers to the player mage are very concerning. He wants to devour all magic, he was probably the entity that drove Malygos mad and convinced him that the answer to the Old God was to use the Nexus Surge Needles as a portal for an Arcane Lord to get in. If he ever finds a way to break free of his staff, his first threat was to bring Dalaran crashing to the ground.
I always thought this was interesting because there’s also another plot around the Dreadlords and how they infiltrated the Kirin’tor by breifly taking the form of Archmage Vargoth. Kathranatir was the founder of the Empyrean Society of mages learing to harness the magic of all cosmic forces. Kathra’natir was trying to steal the Forge of the Guardian, presumably to steal the powers of the Guardian of Tirisfal for himself and the Empyrean Society. Alodi keep a lot of secrets about the cosmos hidden away in his secret vault in Dalaran. (he’s also in a relationship with an ancient arcane entity masqurading as a goblin)
Important to note that Kathra’natir since Legion was imprisioned in Nightbourne Soulstone which is being hidden in the crystal above Dalaran and it’s being used to strengthen Dalaran’s wards, the only people who know about this are Khadgar and Aethas and the exiled Sunreavers.
I dunno about being a pantheon tier being, but Aluneth certainly seems a prime candidate to be from the realm of Order. It is highly differential/respectful of the Titans and their works, which tracks for a creature of their ilk. However without an anchor Aluneth would return to its home plane.
It is interesting to wonder if Titans were not meant to be physical beings by the Progenitors. No other pantheon seems to be able to exist in the Great Dark. Perhaps becoming world souls and then taking on a physical body is an elaborate arcane ritual to allow Order to dominate the material plane.
I hope not. If he’s that powerful, it will just make it all the more humiliating that he was tamed by the Human Potential of Aegwynn.
She didn’t bind him to the staff. She just found him at some point.
Since the Blue Dragons were keeping this artifact in the Nexux vault I assume the blues claim ownership of him. Malygos is probably the one who bound him in the staff.
She did actually, it’s part of the flavour text of Aluneth itself:
“After many setbacks, Aegwynn finally bound the entity to an enchanted greatstaff. The task of containing Aluneth was done, but it would take the Guardian years to truly harness its power.”
I sometimes felt bad for Aluneth, and would’ve loved more information on them. Maybe if we get a more ‘cosmic’ themed expansion they will touch on it a bit more.
All of the Legion weapons were super interesting, I love reading about them even for classes I didn’t even play. I am obviously bias, but Xal’atath is my favourite ‘entity’, I have a feeling we’ll see her show up again someday.
Huh, wowpedia isn’t always right apparently.
Xal’atath showed up again. Plus, in game mechanics, even with the main effect nullified Aluneth still draws mana from sources in the Broken Isles that buff casting and still speaks. Maybe he will return.
I meant more-so that I’d like to see her AFTER her last appearance breaking free of the blade. She seems to have escaped, so I’m hopeful we will see her again in a potential cosmic themed expansion and/or questline.
I think Xal’atath will likely be back, she’s stolen herself a body. I want Aluneth to return too. For reasons stated above, I think he could.
How did you know?! haha
Nice necro I rate it 8/8
But in serious, Xal’atath returning was something to be expected. Usually when Blizzard has a character ‘disappear’ you only get two outcomes
- They show up later in a larger role
- They get forgotten about and left in Lore Limbo.
You only get those two options.
Maybe once we deal with Xal, Aluneth will be the next artifact turned villain
The Shadow Glaive was never "nice’.
Why villain?
I’d be fine if Aluneth became the new Khadgar of sorts. Guiding us but otherwise being a bit more hands off until stuff hits the fan.
Aluneth needs to show up at the ruins of Dalaran, say “I told you this stupid city could fall out of the sky easily.” and then mock me for eating conjured muffins.
That’s all I need from him.
That would be great. Aluneth is such a chaos gremlin and I have the staff transmogged on my mage. He’d get a good laugh out of Dalaran crashing.
Maybe in his chaotic good/neutral kinda way he could show up and help us defeat Xal’atath…That would be absolutely ridiculous hahaha
I actually would love more of these entities explore too…
I like to restore Thal’kiel for my Warlock too, so I can bind him as a Demon Skin for my Inquisitor, wahaha!
Ehem, joking aside I speculate that in WoW most if not all whispers (before SL) come from the Void after all and who know if the whisper that gave him the wisdom for his demonology mastery came from Xal or her Master if she is not one herself or something greater or much more Ancient who was reduce to what we see now, just like old irl Tiamat and that Babylonian mythos. (IMO)
Beyond the skull I find it quite interesting that they made a “dagger” to go with that.
Probably not related but I would really love any type of new lore regarding PC Warlocks and the Void or its dealings with it… I always found it interesting how Warlocks seems to use and combine not just Void but most if not all types of Shadow Magic or their different sources. (IMO)
Honestly the potential for new interesting NPC of all these old Artifact Weapons is just screaming to be use IMO! And don’t even get me started on those we got in DF with the Cloak Whispering you or that Trintet that mention a Dark Star where it summons it power from!!
I’ll roll with the necro.
Since he’s an arcane entity, maybe Aluneth will show up in The Last Titan.
