Alts and how you do them?

Hi all! So a big question for me is do you guys do alts and if so what do you do. i have for years been one to switch mains off and on and have alts but never really knowing what (for ref played since lich mid way, got my own account finally in like WoD i think) to play i have circled around a few classes that definitely feel like my more played ones. But even then i constantly switch and sometimes start over with that class for some reason.

But i guess on top of all that my main issue is using alts for farming and what not cause in my mind it bothers me that i can have my pally have lore master fore multiple contents done (hopefully soon) but then my DK and warrior have pretty much nothing, or like do i do the weekly’s on all 3 so my dk and warrior can actually get some decent gear or they just gonna sit at like 567 or so and just get used once a week. and in that sense why keep them around (i know more tries make it better but honestly after how many years trying for invincible with 1 to 8 characters at times, ive kinda given up on the need to run it 50 times a week for the chance. just not in the cards for me).

So i mean, like i go to school for cybersecurity i quit my job to be a full time student, i work at my school for a work-study so its flexible with school unlike outside jobs. but then i go home and have a seven year old and a two year old to take care of along with a smaller sized house and a wife who is also doing school for nursing but that means i take the kids at home since she has a metric ton more to do then i do. So i play wow the most since most time im playing as a solo player so i can hop in and out but sometimes its easier to just not. so leaning back to runs it might be worth it but just keeping my main up on runs and doing weeklys and trying to hop in to currently atleast norm is pretty much my time cap. (starting to get heroic gear and upgrading it as much as i can but cant get in a heroic raid to save my life since 90% of them want AOTC or 626 ilvl to speedrun it so im just stuck at 611 or so because heroics on farm at this point.) But thats a discussion for somewhere else.

Whats your thoughts on this, most other fourms ive seen some people are fine with 1 charcater others are like i keep up 40+ chars. i just dont know if its worth it but i also dont want to fall into 1 char and then getting burnt out on it and just stop.

Don’t get hung up on having your alts as geared or accomplished as your main. They can lag behind. That’s what makes them alts. Otherwise they’re just additional mains. And that’s hard to maintain.

First I ask my alts for consent before anything happens. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Jokes aside I have alts for different experiences. I want to play a new class, a new race, a different faction, or rp a different style character. My main is for doing all the “work” on and alts are for the fun.

It’s mostly experiencing a new class, and if I’m struggling to understand something from an outside perspective, the best way to do so is to try it yourself.

I don’t really use them for much else: My Mage is an enchanter so I can now make my own enchanted Crests and I’m planning on respeccing Guuah into learning how to make guns as opposed to devices (and bombs, since there’s currently a distinct lack of them).

You don’t need alts for a single thing in WoW, so don’t worry about having one. Everything you need, you can get on your main one way or another.

Definitely read some post people saying they main with tww, 4 toons to take advantage of warbands, and im like i got liek 4 maybe 6 hours a week, including weekends to play i cant keep 4 toons geared and up to date. but i could see my dk an warrior just being there for the instances where i do want multiple farm attempts or just a diffrent playstyle for a bit

Will keep in mind, if anything i could use alts for different proffs just to be more versatile

for me, primarily playing hunters, I do it to space out my pets. instead of having 100+ on one toon, I’ll make a “theme” hunter and they only tame pets (or ride mounts or summon battle pets) that fit that “theme”. my dark iron only uses fire creatures (love the new fire bees), my earthen only uses non-fire element type pets, with a focus on stone and electricity. my gnome only really uses pets that are large bc I think it’s funny. my goblin only uses green pets with the exception of his spirit crab. my main is my “extra favorite or misc pets”.

but outside of that, the toons I create usually have some relation to each other in some way. if I have an idea for a character to have a sibling or a kid or something I’ll make a toon for that. I might not play them much (I have 5 capped toons. 4 of them are hunters, 1 is my next most played class, a druid. if I can’t HAVE a cuddly friend I can BE the cuddly friend.) but they are there for me to fiddle with off and on. my main is the one that completes all content he can get his grimy hands on (solo, I rarely do group things, outside of events like holiday dungeons). everyone else is just sort of “whatever I feel like doing at the time”. and he hasn’t changed being my main since I started playing off and on since BC. he has the most of “me” in him.

it really helps me to have that connection of “I know how this character fits into the relationship tree” to have any kind of desire to play them at all. I’ve deleted toons bc I’m just not clicking with them as a character. and no, despite all the thought I put into the character, I don’t rp them beyond daydreams.

So I have 5 toons total

My hunter which is my main. Raiding and keys on it and it stays pretty well geared
My paladin is kind of my main alt, its decently geared and runs in our alt raid
My Druid and Mage and purely for gathering and doing professions. They will do world content but I dont worry about getting them geared.
My DH just kinda sits there. Idk what to do with it yet lol

I love alts, I have a lot of monks, hunters, warriors, rogues, DKs and mages, a couple of just about everything else, and 1 priest.
The way I use them varies depending on the expansion overall.
My main has been this monk since MoP. If there are different stories for alliance and horde, then I pick a horde alt and run them through everything also like a second main.
If the story is the same for all, then my monk here does everything storywise, well, normal story, campaign, quests, leveling etc. I do not do raids or M anything, no battlegrounds or pvp.
So yeah, mostly all pve with my monk here, then I take my Draenei hunter, my second in command and oldest character through everything that I liked the most.
After those two, all other alts do a lot of WQs, fun quests, gold quests, TW dungeons and whatever else it takes to get them to max quickly. I do not worry about gear on any alts because I don’t do anything that needs them geared up.
After some alts get to 80, I then take them to any legacy dungeons or raids for mount and mog farming and then sit there until I get what I want or it’s time to level them up to the new max again.

I just love leveling and questing and classes and races and I play different ones depending on my mood. Simple really.

For me pally, dk and druid would be my most played with druid being the most but pally closing in, just loved what they stand for and how they look, (also helps they hit like a line of freight trucks for no real reason) since they are essential roided out priest who we’re given weapons.

I have alts in different classes or specs. I main an MM Hunter, have a BM Hunter alt, a Dest Warlock, a Demon Warlock, a Ret Paladin and I’m working on a Priest.

The Priest switches back and forth between Shadow to level and Holy in my effort to learn healing. I’ve also got a Frost Mage in the wings that I’ve worked on from time to time.

Level them to cap and then forget about them. When I feel like leveling them, that is; I haven’t fiddled with them in this expansion yet.

Part of me is waiting for catch-up time towards the launch of Midnight.

And thats one reason i start over sometimes is i get bored of max level, so i start over as a tank or a healer or something different. and either change up am i doing spam or do i just level by quests on this toon?

Pretty much, this.

I’ve rotated between four characters since the start of TWW, all of them are reasonably geared, at this point.

But, only two of them are really my “mains” that I bothered to even do professions on. My Hunter, and BrM monk tank.

Only one of my characters is maxxed cooking and fishing, my Hunter- he’s my real main that supplies the rest of the warband with feasts and such.

I often borrow resonance crystals in exchange for Kej from my others. Only my Hunter uses the Kej.

My tank alt is my secondary, and he’s useful for quick queues whenever I want to do PvE or anything else.

TLDR - I really only play two characters semi-seriously, the rest are for experimentation and farming.

Kinda what im thinking is keeping my pally up a bit with either my dk or warr maybe being decent geared but pretty much existing for professions and mog/mount runs

You are like me! All of my hunters have themes except for my draenei who I’ve had since TBC.
DID- fire
Earthen-stone
Human based on my dad(RIP)- animals based on past pets
MH orc- wolves
KT named MacDonald- Animals found on a farm
Nelf- Based on wife and daughter, only tames cats
Belf- Creepy things, spiders etc
Z troll- Dinosaurs
Worgen- wolves and dogs
Vulpera- Foxes
Unead- Skeletal or decaying
Mechagnome- Mech

Sorry, long list, I love my BM hunters.
I also have a recent MM human loosely based on my, first MM I’ve ever had, enjoying it, but rarely brings out a pet.

hunter fits my preferences when I’m not playing a single-player game I can cheat in. (play ur game however u bloody well please so long as it’s not impacting OTHER ppl. if I want Geralt of Rivia to be one shotting things so I can focus on the story I will, but in an mmo? asolutely not.)

  • friend to accompany me
  • not caster
  • ranged
  • not doing the tanking myself
  • FRIEND WITH ME innit they cute? (I like animals, can u tell?)
  • brief stealth ability is a bonus

druid ends up being a close second bc they can be the animals but also

  • stealth
  • interact with things while mounted (shapeshifted)
  • instant mount button

I also like rogues a lot bc of the stealth, but they lack the animal part so. shrug. I like stealth so I can skip past things I don’t need or want to kill if possible.

I don’t get bored any more at max than I do at lower levels, but if I’ve done all the things for the day/week that I want to do, got renown maxed or any quests done, then I need something else to do, so bring on the alts.
I will say, I am sometimes a little bummed when I reach max with my alts though, because I really do enjoy the journey with some of them, and often it goes a bit too fast, even if I do things to slow myself down. /shrug
