Alternatives to WoW

I’m sorry to add another one of these posts onto the forums, but I’m seriously trying to find another MMORPG that’s at least comparable in quality. Everybody is talking about FF14 but game looks atrocious from a visuals standpoint and like a weaker version of Terra; I’m not really into New World either. Anybody have any recommendations for MMORPGs?

Only others I can think of are

Guild wars 2- fun but lacks substance at the end unless that’s changed in the last few years.

Elder scrolls online- didn’t like it, but to be fair I played it when it first released and it was honestly hot garbage. Apparently it’s doing much better now but I can’t swear by it.

Not much else in the way of new stuff that really fit that criterial. Lot of neat older games like anarchy online and a few other games of the past. But their graphics are hella dated.

New world didn’t give me any excitement as it looked pretty meh and I swear I’ve seen large groups taking over areas somewhere else before like black desert which was a terrible game. The skills and weapon swaps just look like a clone of guild wars 2.

Crafting looked alright, but I don’t wanna start a new mmo just for crafting.

Runescape? All I could think of lol.

FF14 is nothing like Terra, but if it’s not your style then there are other options.

GW2 is a fun game, and the story can be enjoyable… but unless you like grinding out collectable weapon skins it’s kinda meh in the long term.

ESO is good and well rounded. It has story content and raids, but also stuff just for the people who don’t want to adventure to do. Also, I love that I can make monies by pickpocketing NPCs and then stabbing them in the back. I didn’t personally love the combat in ESO, but others swear by it.

I hear SWOTOR is good, but I’ve never played it, so I can’t really say.

My drug of choice is FF14. I love that I get a great story, fun dungeons and raids, and lots of non combat things to do, but I get it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

SWTOR is fabulous.
LOTRO - been awhile for lord of the rings online.

SWTOR is nice this time of year. Ten year celebration with a new xpac coming for the holidays, too.

Is Rift still a thing? Can’t be good, nobody talked about it.

Black desert online. I only mention it because a guy at work loves it. I think it’s just because he has a gambling problem and he can get his fix in that game

The big ones have already been mentioned, I’d try those first.

Rift has been dead in the water for a while. The current company cares nothing about the game. Makes me sad as I loved that game at one time. :frowning:

I liked the class concept. Could choose 3 and then spec into them to build something unique. I just remember it because it was the first “WoW killer” to pop up after I had started playing.

ESO is fun, but unless you join with sub, you are severely limited with inventory space as, like all bethseda games, everything is a damn crafting material and it fills up fast.

But, if you are not into crafting and don’t care about most of the DLC content, it’s a good diversion.

if u get a book , is like WOW game HAHAHAHAH no is not pepole dont do alot reding is so dum pepole dont wanna red is 2020 !

You should consider SWTOR (Star Wars The Old Republic), it is a great game, it has everything that FFXIV has, except for ridiculous transmogs and “potatoes”, yes there are “cat girls”, but they are much more realistic and not just there for Asmongold to get all hot and bothered over. The devs care about the game and are working hard to make it what it used to be. Also, there are many features that people on this forum have asked for in the game now, or coming soon. In SWTOR, you have player housing, well-written main quest stories, fairly extensive character customization and PVP is actually fun (but less rewarding than in WOW). SWTOR is more casual-friendly and probably not for the hard-core raider, but the raids are challenging (especially finding a raiding guild). Combat is VERY similar to WOW, with tab-targetting and all, but a bit more clunky (although less-clunky than FFXIV). Sure the Devs are not a charismatic as the FFXIV devs, but they do seem to love the world (galaxy) that they are building.

Also, you can play the best part of the game for free and you can unlock all the currently released expansions by subscribing for just one month.

Really some of us should make a “WOW Refugee” guild in SWTOR.

If you want to play for graphics, just play games that runs on the newest engines, like bf2042 (frostbite 4) instead of mmos. Mmos are purposefully made with “bad” graphics and old janky engines so that the game can be accessed by the wider market.

If you have a gaming rig, big chances are you’re not going to play mmos. If you have the capabilities to run several of the newest eye candies, why spend most of your time playing just one mmo.

Most mmo players that I know uses old outdated and even jury-rigged gears. People like this can’t play those games. So, the next best thing for this kind of gamers are mmos because mmos are kind of like a one-stop-shop for gaming. The genre contains a little bit of everything with a lower technical requirement.

SWTOR uses the Frostbyte engine, not sure which version though.

SWTOR runs on the Hero engine. If it runs on frostbite, my laptop would’ve burned long ago

Yeah, you are right, I guess I am too tired. Frostbite does not work well for MMOs though, that is why the took co-op PVE out of Mass Effect.

Also, SWTOR had a MASSIVE budget (at the time), that it why it is so much better than other Hero engine games ( I think PWE makes a few). Also, Neverwinter is decent, although VERY linear, if you can get over the lock boxes.

Only other games worth mentioning are BDO and Elyon(which releases later this year). If you like ARPGs Lost Ark is coming out soon as well.

If none of those spark interest, swap over to FPS games or something. FPS is doing really good right now with a lot of options.

With MMOS the current ones out would be FF14 (which I know isn’t your cup of tea), SWTOR, ESO and GW2 if you going for a more traditional mmo. I think all are great in their own way.

Black Desert Online is ok, visually amazing so is the combat, just I can’t get around how everything is gender locked and is heavily focused on cash shop.

Lost Ark is a ARPG mmo releasing soon to the west, if you live in the few regions it’s releasing, I was very hyped for this until I found out Australia won’t be getting this :sob:.

New World visually looks great, the ground work is their but on release I feel it be very…very bare bones, to me New World is a wait a few months see how it goes, especially if you like healing, literally only one weapon (life staff) you can use as healing and 3 skills, magic is very bare bones aswell with just 2 weapons, Fire staff and ice gauntlets also very pvp focused if you like that.

Elyon is a toughie, it’s a little outdated vs newer MMOs, but they’ve did a lot of work to improve combat, it looks semi decent but the worry of just being a cash shop focused mmo is there aswell.

In all honesty it’s all on opinion, you say FF14 is horrible visually I currently think it’s one of the better visually MMOs out their, just it a very very slow starting mmo, need to put a lot of time into it.

With FF14, ESO and Swtor usually the go to for many players I’d suggest giving them a try, you may change your opinion on them.
