Hey blizz. I love your game. Been playing since I was 12 (27 now) and I would love to play classic that I didn’t see. Please bring back day long Alterac Valleys. Every story I talk about with other people mention the classical week long AV. No other BG has NPC’s so involved (aside from Ashran which was really fun).
Patch 2.3, well into TBC’s lifespan.
I hope the team really does look at balancing the map. Having played as both alliance and horde, that map is considerably more favored towards the alliance team. Just one example is capturing the bunkers near Drek’thar vs the Bunkers closest to Vanndar and the alliance base. Because the Horde tower is a solid ‘tent’ it makes the archers not really come into play because they can be very easily line of sighted. Whereas the Alliance towers are open, making the archers much more of an issue to deal with. It would be great to see this battleground as balanced as possible.
Once again banging our heads on the wall with asking something different from Blizzard.
I hope you all get in 1.12 and hate it. Classic AV (1.5 Patch) could have been fun, but you can’t say that you wasn’t warned.
Dumb it down Blizzard.

Nice, someone found a way to make guild recruitment even more annoying.
What’s the problem then resources are what ruined AV.
Removing pieces from the chessboard and neutering the remaining ones ruined it long before reinforcements.
Silly PvP main thinking that PvE players dont get to make the decisions when it comes to BG’s
Well I would have preferred 1.5 and I think a better compromise would have been 1.8. I can see where they’re coming from though even if I disagree with it. Putting nostalgia aside, I dont think many people would enjoy the grind that is 1.5 AV. I was a teenager back then so I had nothing but time, I imagine it’s the same for others. The 1.12 iteration is probably the best for their target audience. Enough nostalgia while being short enough to allow for replayability.
1.8 (on paper) looks like the best option. I don’t recall which version I played, but the large scale AV stalemates were the highlight of the entire game for me.
With 1.12, it seems like the point of AV will not be to engage in a drawn out seemingly unwinnable battle, but to get some gear as fast as possible (not defend) so you can move on to other content. Disappointing.
Reason enough. Opinion is removed and developer sense is applied. It is what they’ve chosen to use, for their reasons. Their game, their choice, their reasons.
It isn’t killing anything, at all lol.
Classic will thrive just as well as it was going to before 1.12AV was mentioned.
1.8 was after portions of the map were cut off and NPCs were nerfed 15-30%. Also I believe the landmines were removed in that patch.
Going by these links:
The mines were removed in 1.8 and the Goblin Shredder in 1.10 (along with a lot of NPCs and the remaining ones were nerfed again).
So I’d want a 1.7 AV. It’s the original vision of an epic battle between two warring factions in which the players merely contribute and help out. But with a couple bug fixes and tweaks from 1.5 AV.
I am fine with any version that encourages large scale battles.
I could be wrong - but I think 1.8 took away some of the “geometry exploits” people used to scam the map. That is the only reason I raised this.
I don’t have an issue with bug fixes. That’s different from deliberate design decisions like nerfing or removing NPCs. 1.7 seems ideal to me. You’ve got that epic battle scenario. Powerful NPCs everywhere. Parts of the map that few ever experience before they were cutoff. A buffed Korrak. Landmines, Shredders. Just SO much that has been lost to the ages.
“Planning.”
Agree that classic is going to be great - some of just have really found memories of early AV.
There’s changes from later patches that should probably be implemented as well:
Patch 1.8.0 (2005-10-10):
- In order to keep teams in Alterac Valley more numerically balanced, players will now enter Alterac Valley on a one-for-one basis (i.e. if there are 30 players in the battleground for each side with 10 players in the Alliance queue and 2 players in the Horde queue, only two players from each team will be added, bringing the total to 32 per side).
- The Frostwolf Relief Hut now has appropriate guards.
- There is now a portcullis at the end of each of the entrance tunnels inside Alterac Valley. They will rise two minutes into the battle.
Not exactly sure what this next one means, I’m assuming it means more guards:
- Iceblood Graveyard has been fortified.
Patch 1.9.3 (2006-02-07):
- The default graveyards in Alterac Valley for each side were moved further up the tunnels away from the battleground exit. This should prevent accidentally leaving the battleground.
Patch 1.10.0 (2006-03-28):
- Tower Banners in Alterac Valley can no longer be used through walls.
Agree- 1.7 with bug fixes would be ideal.
Just not sure if 1.7 without bug fixes will work well.
Reinforcements are what ruined at.
1.7 to me is the sweet spot. (with the mentiond bug fixes)
