I have come back to this game for one reason, I want to get the mage tower armor sets on warrior and paladin. I therefore have two questions:
-
do I just need to complete one spec’s challenge to get the full set or do I need to do all 3?
-
what is the recommended gear sets for plate? I hear old armor with sockets is ideal now, but good luck finding a single guide that even mentions what those pieces are!
You get the gear for completing a single challenge on that class, yeah.
There are probably some timewalking guides on good/bis gear. I just threw my body at the challenges with Shadowlands stuff until I got it, but the alts who had socket gear from bfa had an easier time.
I heard Siege of Orgrimmar is super good for socket gear…?
Wonderful.
What would the ideal ret and arms build look like if I just wanted to one-shot this?
Impending Victory as well as Second Wind lets you survive the first phase. Hard part about Arms challenge, I think, is just having the damage to wrap up the second phase. Consumables, drums, legacy gear, etc, make that a bit easier.
I don’t really remember what I played for Ret, just that all my wipes were me not paying attention and getting hit by Val’kyr waves.

Is fury easier now than it was during legion? I had genuine fun with the arms challenge back then, but post bfa arms hurts me to play.
It’s fun now, but still quite spammy.
I mean the challenge. I just tried it, and I think I need MUCH better gear.
The fury challenge is easier than the arms one. You don’t really need special gear for either challenge because both fury and ret are pretty easy. If you still want to take advantage of sockets and whatnot, just park next to the LFR NPC in new Dal and steamroll them until you hit the lockout.
Or, if you want to save time, just farm the first boss in Emerald Nightmare for the pod trinket and call it a day. It has a chance to drop on every difficulty and can trivialize certain mechanics.
Really? I thought the fury one was one of the hardest back then, and I did almost all of them but maybe 5.
Are there a lot of slotted gear pieces in lfr legion raids?
Only need to do 1.

This will get you started. For gear instead of farming Chromie time, you can run old legion raids. They can drop with a socket and if they are ilvl 50 they can be enchanted with the old enchants in this guide. You can also craft the MoP dreadful gladiator gear, they come with sockets and the helm has a meta socket. The trinkets, enchants and consumables should be the priority, they will make the most difference.

I found this guide when mage tower first came out and used it on all 12 of my characters. I got all 12 mogs including the bear and book mount. Like I said, the trinkets, enchants and consumables are the biggest help. Then run old legion raids, you want that stuff to be ilvl 50 so you can apply the old enchants and fill the gem slots with your main stat.
If you see an item on the guide uses a Shadowlands enchant, it doesn’t need be ilvl 50. Just pointing that out.
Also don’t lock yourself into talent builds if they don’t seem to be working for you. Sometimes taking a worse passive talent might be better for you, especially when all the mechanics are happening lol.
Having tried the mage tower before I refunded my sub, I don’t think I am going to try too hard to do it.
Those armor sets are UGLY, and the game is too non-functional in its current state for a bit of nostalgia.
