like… what classes actually need versatility? i have NO clue whether this stat is for melee classes, spell-casters, hunters, tanks, healers… i don’t get it… i mean, i do all that stuff (aside from tanking, too self-stressful), and i get by with the spec’s core stat. so… what is versatility used for?
Not sure if serious…
Tanks like versatility.
It is possibly still a really strong stat in PvP as well.
Otherwise, some specs really like a hefty chunk of versatility but it’s complicated; scaling, dynamic stat values and all that jazz.
Versatility increases how much damage/healing you do while decreasing how much damage you take. Any class could use it although it tends to get overshadowed by other stats.
Versatility is good for everyone, just like crit is good for everyone, and haste is good for everyone. You will have to sim your character to see which stats are better than others for that character
Then there’s times when I see things like “none of the secondaries are really that good so just stack vers” in guides.
Tanks and PvP.
Its the more straightforward and boring stat lol, just a straight static damage buff/debuff.
It increaseS the damage of your spells and abilities, the healing of your spells and abilities, and reduces the amount of damage you take,
So even if it’s not your best stat, it’s never useless. I like it better than mastery when it comes to mythic raiding due to how our mastery works, for example.
ahh… so it’s a tank stat… you say it’s good for pvp too huh? hmmm… well, that’s good to know…
alrighty… uh… this is gonna sound stupid, but… is there a specific site for simming? do i need an addon? or do i just go to sw and beat the heck outta the training dummies?
The best way to know what stat is best for your character is to get the SimCraft addon, and go to raidbots-dot-com. The two work together.
I re-read it a few times and thought maybe I was missing something until I saw your comment and realized it wasn’t just me. /whew
ah. alrighty thanks for the help! i kept seeing versatility on my touch of the void’s but… never felt it was that useful before (i mean, it’s on-use was a bunch of melee tentacles) so… good to know that stat is actually useful.
Versatility (as its name suggests) is the secondary stat that is good for literally every spec of every class. It makes your abilities hit harder and reduces the damage you take from enemies.
It’s a stat for everyone.
Now, depending on your class and spec, the stats are weighed differently as to which one “does the most” for you.
Versatility is hugely important for most tanking specs. For everyone else, it varies in importance/how much it affects overall DPS/survivability/healing.
For druids, versatility generally falls 3rd in the list of importance for all specs, so it’s never useless. For guardians, it’s actually even more important.
The build I have used for demo throughout the expansion (prior to corruption at least) really swayed to wanting crit/vers pretty early on which was new to me.
Usually specs really lean on haste hard but for demo that desired threshold was relatively low before all I wanted to get my hands on was crit and vers.
Not sure if it is true or not but I have always associated specs that like lots of versatility to be either a tank, a healer, or a dps spec that scales relatively poorly.
Vers just feels boring. Even at 10% it feels like it does nothing.
10% haste/mastery/crit increase feels noticeable… Verse does not.
So I just ran your stat weights based on your last login on WoW, and this is your priority from most helpful to least:
- Crit
- Versatility
- Haste
- Mastery
- Agility
see, i only focused on int/agi cause that’s what the specialization page said was my primary stat. so vers i focus 3rd, huh? gotcha. i’ll make sure to build that up.
Versatility is what you would focus 2nd behind crit. This expansion, primary stats are the weakest stats for most (all?) specs for some reason. Makes no sense.
They used to be pretty strong in earlier patches but, the nature of secondaries makes them become stronger the more you get of them, whereas a point of str/int/agi stays essentially the same no matter what. Plus theres things like corruptions that essentially make every 1 secondary stat = 1.09, 1.18, ect. Its not something blizz can really avoid unless they nerf secondaries super hard every patch. Another point in secondaries favor is essences / proc corruptions like td, infinite S.T.A.R.S. ect that directly gain benefit from crit, and vers, and indirectly from haste making them even more valuable.
I wouldn’t say its GOOD, but rather its “ok”. It’s nothing special. It doesn’t interact with your class. It’s nothing more than a blanket buff.
Depending on your class, there are better stats, and there are possibly worse stats. The design for Versatility is that it is a neutral stat.
Just like all stats, different specs value it differently. Some love it, some try and avoid it.
It was built as a “neutral” stat that is neither actively good nor actively bad.
IT’s also commonly used when they have a piece of gear for multiple specs.
IE Two hander STR weapon as an example. Ret Paladin, Arms Warrior, Fury Warrior, Blood DK, Unholy DK. They don’t really share much in common in terms of stats. So quite often you’ll see gear for multiple specs will have something like Critical / Versatility. That way its “useful” but not “perfect” for a number of specs.
That’s its design. It’s for the most part a safe stat to “fall back on” until you can manage to get gear with better stats.
