[Alpha] Oh no... They just killed Survival

Whelp, there goes my favorite spec of all time. They’re making it a fully melee spec and completely removing the focus from the bombs. Mongoose is now mandatory. Why on Earth would they do this? Everybody who plays Surv loves it and they’re giving it a complete and total rework!

it was a full melee spec from 2016 on wth are you talking about lol

No it wasn’t. It’s currently a midrange spec like Ret and the new DH spec.

no it’s not? you need to be in melee range at all time for optimal damage. if you are sitting outside of melee range for prolonged periods in pve you are playing suboptimally

It’s a hybrid spec and you lose very little damage by being out of melee. 90% of your damage is available at range, and you have Aspect of the Hawk which makes it 99% on CD. It’s less optimal to not be in melee range, but it’s not like being a warrior where you do literally nothing when you’re 10 yards away.

you lose a ton lol. constantly overcapping on focus, losing wfb cdr, losing kc resets, etc. it’s not a hybrid spec, I promise you. tons of people try to force it by changing the apl and it’s always a huge loss

You’re being purposely dense. Is it or is it not more ranged oriented than warrior or rogue? I’m not claiming you sit the whole fight 25 yards away, but it was very deliberately designed to allow you to fight from range at times with minimal impact.

i mean you’re going on about how it’s “fully melee” in midnight, when you can still sit far away and wfb to your hearts content at the same amount. so you tell me who’s being desne

Cool, thanks for arriving at the point of the topic.

No, you can’t. They’re reducing the impact of bombs massively. Sentinel now requires you to Raptor Strike to proc. The Apex talents are focused on Raptor Strike. Explosive Shot is removed. They fully shifted the damage profile away from the ranged abilities to the melee ones.

if you expected the melee spec to not incentivize melee for another expansion, then you h ave fallen in the same delusions as others

What is weird is all the bombs, they really went all in with the bombs and why is there a shotgun talent? xD

The shotgun is replacing Fury of the Eagle. Seems to be the exact same thing. Probably just a way of updating the graphics of it. I’d bet they’re just reusing the new Killing Spree animation. Definitely feels out of place though. Surv uses a crossbow, not a gun.

I think the new talents look cool, really defines the paths of wfb vs mongoose bite as well as the explosives/munitions hunter vs the bleeds/savagery hunter that people on these forums are always talking about.

Are they doing away with tip of the spear?

Are they doing away with tip of the spear?

Seems like it, which really sucks. It’s one of my favorite ‘abilities’ in the game that gives a really satisfying flow to the spec and really emphasizes the theme of working together with your pet.

It does look that way. As of right now, it seems like it’s a 15% damage increase to Raptor Strike and a 5 focus reduction.

it replaces fury of the eagle. They are leaning away from the spear themes now that survival can DW.

Its funny because I came here to complain they’re tripling down on the bomb focus which is my least favorite part of survival.

Wish they would get rid of the bomb fantasy of the spec. Go back to venoms, traps, and bleeds. Really, really like the change to being able to dual wield; been wanting that since Legion when SV was made a melee spec.

Honestly if they wanna keep the bomb fantasy just make a whole new spec centered around explosives and gadgets.

Lol yeah this was my take as well, and I’m not a fan of it. I hate WFB, and every expansion since it was introduced it has gained more relevance. With Midnight it seems like they’re committing to two talent pathways for SV: Raptor Strike and WFB. I don’t really see what the OP is complaining about, though I haven’t actually looked into the numbers of everything yet. But as far as I can tell, WFB now seems to be one of two core pillars of the spec.

I’m also in the camp of wanting to see all of SV hunters’ traditional toolkit represented: poisons, explosives, and even hints of shadow and arcane magic. Hunter fantasy (in WoW and beyond) often sees them as rugged hybrids/generalists who mix and match physical effectiveness with knowledge of nature and magic. SV is just veering way too much into the crazed bombardier archetype, which feels more suited to a tinkerer class (ahem).
But at the same time, they seem to want to retain the more traditional hunter feel with Raptor Strike, and the two aesthetics mix really poorly. ESPECIALLY when you’ve got something like Sentinel hero talents thrown in.

But hey, we’re finally getting dual-wield back, so that’s something.
