Allied Races for Free after BFA?

Last I heard around the rumor mill, the ability to unlock the current ARs will either be put behind a paywall or removed entirely come 8.3 starting with the Legion ARs and then the BfA ARs come 9.0…

Anyone who already has them unlocked at this time will have nothing to worry about.

Having had them unlocked basically forever, I’d be totally fine with this. I’d love to see more of them running around, and I wouldn’t feel too bummed about having had to ‘work’ for them (all I really put in was time, though…).

If people really would get upset, they could offer some kind of race-themed cosmetics to tide them over, maybe?

I’ve been disappointed by the AR system in general for the most part. Want to play a race we heavily advertised as part of our BfA promotions and attached to the pre-order bonus? Cool, here’s 2 and a half weeks of dailies to do. Enjoy.

Dark iron or maghar? Level a character you don’t care about to max level and do 2 weeks of dailies. Then and only then can you re-level the character you actually wanted to play from level 20.

this is the main reason i wish we got subraces (cosmetic options on character creation) over allied races.

God, yes.

Every time I play my AR, there’s this little voice in my head going, “Hey, I’d really love to be able to use this stuff on my main.”

Especially the races like Lightforged which are just the base race, but with some markings and tiny differences you have to squint to notice.

Also, give me Wildhammer tattoos, Blizzard!

LOL no they will be pay to avoid the grind, like everything else. Get with the program.

If anything, I see them offering the option to pay to unlock them…

All at the cost of removing the in-game method of unlocking them, IF they allow them to be unlocked at all.

Why would they remove it? They didn’t remove levelling they gave you the option to pay for it.

It’s perfectly in line with their methodology.

Two words:

Artificial scarcity.

The rarer something becomes, the more coveted it becomes.

The more coveted it becomes, the more expensive one can make it.

Yeah so the cash price will be fairly high huh.

Nah, i got it sooner than the others, thats the reward already, they may get it for free, but i got to play it WAY sooner than them

Seriously! Lightforged, highmountain, Mag’har and Dark Iron especially shouldve been just been addtional customization. Nightborne and Void Elves are a little trickier since they “swapped factions” in a sense.

Zandalari and Kul Tirans are also more reasonable as AR since they have different models than their related race. But even still it wouldn’t have been that much of a strech for it to be customization considering Orcs got straight backs. Lore/RP wise it’d be way better for Kul’tirans since they have smaller “normal” kul’tirans as well as the playable ones lorewise.

And the original racials pretty much all wouldve worked theme/lorewise for the majority of the AR versions except for maybe a few. And even those are mostly just the “for fun” ones.

Additionally it would make it easier to add more subrace options as well. such as wildhammer, various other troll species, Taunka etc.

AR was a unfortunate direction to go IMO

Exactly; bordering on expansion prices.

It seems unlikely that current ones would suddenly become available without the rep requirement. Maybe future ones will have less rep or whatever. Though they do change even long standing policies if they feel enough pressure so you never know.

I have all of them available and I never found any of them to “hard” to unlock. I don’t consider doing 4 world quests every 5 or 6 days to be difficult or challenging. That aside I don’t care what they do with them. They aren’t much more than reskins of current races anyway.

You have to think of it from the position of a company that wants you to get into the game and play the current expansion. If you wanted to play an allied race from the previous xpac, and someone told you it will take you a while of grinding, on one character, to unlock a low level of the character you want. You’ve just lost a consumer.

If you tell them its has a paid option and you can just unlock it, the new player will be like, oh okay ill buy the new race buy a boost and see you in-game.

Again, provided they remain available in-game without purchase. If it gets to where you HAVE to pay to unlock them and that’s the only way to do so, then that same consumer’s not going to stick around long enough to actually try to play the game.

Most things are available with an option. You want game time? Grind the gold or buy some. You want a mount? Grind for the mount or buy one. You want a pet? Capture the pet or buy one. You want a 110 Hunter? Grind the levels or buy one.

like I said at the end of my post. I don’t care if the have no requirements to obtain them anymore.

However, we’re talking about something that’s “Almost” as unique as the store mounts.

In the Kul Tiran and Zandalari’s case? It actually IS as unique as the store mounts.
