Allied Race: Quilboar

SHADOWLANDS EDIT: Getting some confusion here, this post was made during patch 8.3 while there was a lot of buzz about Allied Races! Just saw the Hearthstone promo for BlizzConOnline this year as well… very funny.
This is mostly a joke, but enjoy anyways ;D

TL;DR, Building an Allied Race: Quilboar

Hello all, thought I’d toss my hat into the Allied Race ring again. Last post I made about this was about Forest Trolls for the Horde and it got a lot of positive attention, so I thought I’d try my hand at one of the most annoying and aggravating races in the lore and hand them to the Horde as well. Cheers

Lore (Spoilers for Mag’har recruitment quests)

New creatures have infested the Barrens.
With the return of the Hero of the Horde and the Mag’har orcs, beings native to ancient Draenor have started to tear the ecosystem of the Barrens apart.

In the north, roaming Saberon have started killing off native prey animals. Now the people of the Crossroads must learn to stay ahead of the alien predators, while dealing with the starving raptor populations, growing more bold everyday.

The Quilboar moved south, harassed by Horde adventurers and the Saberon alike, but they were not safe for long. Soon, Botani appeared in the South, twisting the Overgrowth once more and bending the Quilboar thorns to their will. What little Quilboar remained have retreated to Razorfen Kraul. Rallying under the Razormane Chieftain Mangletooth, they hunker down and prepare for the worst as the Botani attack.

Questline

The Quests would not initially start as an Allied Race recruitment quest. Instead, the hero would be sent to the Crossroads to hunt some Saberon and quell the starving raptors.

Next, they would be summoned by Hamuul Runetotem, who is investigating the sudden explosion of life in the Overgrowth. There they would find Botani, who have began to twist both the Overgrowth and the massive thorns of the Quilboar to their will. The hero would kill Botani and stop the summoning of a genesaur.

Next, the hero and Hamuul would follow the Botani south, where they would find an assault on Razorfen Kraul. There, they would witness the united Quilboar tribes of the Barrens in a desperate last stand against a horde of Botani and corrupted-barrens creatures (like the corrupted orcs in Gorgrond.)

Hamuul decides to aid the Quilboar, for the moment, and after the battle is finished, there is an intense dialogue between Hamuul and Mangletooth.
Hamuul convinces Mangletooth to be diplomatic until the Botani threat is defeated, and they both accompany the hero to kill the Botani leader.

Unable to defeat the leader with their combined powers, Hamuul calls to the ancient spirit of Agamaggan for aid who grants him the Boar Form, which is strong enough to defeat the Botani.

After the battle has ended, Mangletooth recognizes Hamuul as the prophet of Agamaggan, and pledges the forces of the Razormane to the Horde.

Hamuul brings Mangletooth and a group of Quilboar before the Horde Council, who all share their distaste for the creatures. But after Mangletooth pledges to fight against the growing Alliance presence in the Barrens, the Council agree to allow them into the Horde… for now.

Is it Lore Breaking?

Well, no. For one, Draenor races are shown running into the Barrens at the end of the Mag’har questline.
Quilboar are tiny little delicious snacks that the Saberon would love to eat, I’m sure.
The Botani would love to mingle in with the Overgrowth, possibly intrigued by any Emerald Nightmare essence left behind. They are strong, and it’s entirely possible they could push the Quilboar back simply because they can control the thorns better than the Quilboar can.
Mangletooth is no stranger to helping the Horde, even just for personal gain. And Hamuul is more diplomatic than warlike.
Agamaggan granting his strength to Hamuul is the most lore-stretchy. We’ve never seen Druids of the Tusk, but Agamaggan is a Wild God so it’s not impossible. We already know he doesn’t like what his children do, and so perhaps he saw this as a way to let them grow and mature.
Mangletooth and the Quilboar in general exalt Agamaggan, so it’s not a stretch to assume they’d worship the first Druid of the Tusk in history.
The final piece is other Quilboar. But the Quilboar have been at war with each other for years. Mangletooth shows no love for other tribes and would be happy to fight them all as well if asked to, as shown in Classic.
Personally I think it’s plausible.

Classes + lore
Warrior - v
Hunter - v
Rogue - Same for all three, simple enough explanations
Death Knight? - perhaps Quilboar were raised from when Amnennar the Coldbringer ran Razerfen Downs?
Shaman - Quilboar Geomancers are just crude Shaman already
Mage? - Listed in the past as a Quilboar class, though this can be changed/retconned
Druid - Thornweavers are essentially primitive Druids. Quilboar druid forms listed later

Racials

Annoying Nature
Increased Threat Level

Plainrunners
Gradually increase unmounted movement speed up to 20% while remaining out of combat

Barrens Hunter
Increased rewards from Skinning

Thornweaver
Summon thorns in an area, dealing some damage to enemies and slowing their movement speed

Pig Out
Can Eat from all foods used for Hunter pets and Crafting Reagents

Call of Mangletooth
10% increased damage when fighting other Quilboar

Other Race Details
Druid forms

  • Tank - Boar (Horde Druids that complete the quest line also gain this form)
  • Melee - Raptor
  • Travel - Gazelle
  • Aquatic - Frenzy (annoying fish for an annoying race)
  • Moonkin - Thorn based thing, would have to be a custom designed look
  • Tree - Thorn elemental? That a thing? It could be…
  • Flying - Vulture

Racial Mount would be a boar, of course
Hunters would start with a boar pet. If you don’t like boars you’d hate playing this race…
Starting zone would be a phased part of the Razorfen instance. Maybe this could lead to a Horde-friendly phased Razormane city/town for those that have completed the quest.

Let me know what you think! This is mostly a joke, but on the off chance Quilboar become a race I think this should be how it’s done. Let me know if I missed anything

Not a fan of the idea but yeah take my like. You’ve thought it out.

For practical reasons the alliance needs some sort of pretty cutesy cuddly race that draws in a bunch of players.

Nah I want Harpies or Dryads.

I admire your passion, OP.

Next Alliance allied race for sure! Blizzard loves to give the Alliance the races few people actually asked for. Very well thought out though.

Allied Race: Oops! All Quills

No boars, just a bag of quills.

No, just no. we dont need boars as a playable race

Moar boarz!

My first hunter pet, back in early 2005, was a boar from Loch Modan. I named it Boarme because I thought I would quickly tire of it. I didn’t. It was with him until my shaman took the hunter into the depths of Zangarmarsh and did something unspeakable to him. I think he set the boar free.

So the lesson is…you can never have enough boar.

Brick, are you just looking at races in the game and saying that you love them?

you talk about saberons and botani and you didn’t realize how they would be a better allied race material?

Quilboar playable would make more sense as an alliance of convenience with the, well, Alliance, they hate the horde, they hate taurens and orcs, and so orcs and taurens hate then

Personally I don’t like Saberons, but the Botani would be a cool allied race.

As for the quilboar joining the alliance, that is entirely plausible. The hatred between the races goes waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back. But I figured it would be a bit unfair to have an Alliance allied race smack dab in the middle of the Orc, Darkspear and Tauren territories. Could lead to some lore problems.

Alternatively, you could rewrite this but instead use the Quilboar from Kul Tiras for the Alliance. Obviously though, that raises it’s own problems

it could also lead to interesting and juicy plots with faction war or not

they have other settlements away from then tough, it would not be that much of a problem

I could definitely see maybe Tyrande allowing the Quilboar in as a big “f you” to the Horde races, or even to stoke the fires of war.

Now that i’m typing it, that almost sounds more compelling…

Do it. :boar::ok_hand:

Like the comment I believe in a 12 allied race.

YES! I just got done at Grol’dom Farm with my monk and got curious about whether other people would like to have the Quilboar as an allied race. I was thinking maybe have them as an “either-side” sort of race like the Pandaren; just make the character and choose faction later, but Alliance makes sense. Maybe for the Horde, get the Gnolls?

I agree. Quillboar allied race.

I kinda feel the tauren would have a bit of a hard time allying with a group they have had alot of issues between for a long time is the issue but it may be possible…id prefer gnolls personally
