Alliance could have had a bit of reasonable non-contrived edge if they let Dark Irons stay mostly evil

This is including Moira, who pre-retcon was totally fine if not enamored by the rampant slavery that Dark Irons love and shoulder rubbing with the Twilights Hammer. Unfortunately this has all been retconned to be a result of Ragnaros I guess.

I would get the idea that like “yeah no we can’t have a playable race with slaves” okay fine you can get rid of them but make the Dark Irons totally unapologetic and unrepentant about it. This would have actually given the Alliance an edgy race that isn’t contrived instead of turning all Stormwind humans randomly into racists or something stupid like that.

I mean it’s pretty implied that pre-rag enslavement the Dark Irons were still a pretty anti-social culture, considering they turned Grim Batol into the evil magic version of Chernobyl with the amount of messed up magic they used during the war of three hammers.

But unfortunately we can’t have that, because she had some legitimate grievances against her father so now she’s incapable of doing anything immoral for the rest of her entire life. (And her boyfriend also did nothing wrong too ever just for good measure)

In general, many races have lost their edge within the Alliance. We now have quite a few races and candidates who would reasonably have an edge.

Worgen
Night Elves
Dark Iron Dwarves
Void Elves

Just to name a few

Now no longer have their original nemesis, killed upon the alter of ending faction conflict and will be extinct and back to being british humans in a single generation

That ship sailed in Vanilla to be fair.

I think Blizzard is afraid to confirm that 99% of the time fel/void/death magic usage is bad

There was a possibility that we could have gotten that back in BFA, but it was Blizzard’s decision — or rather Danuser’s

I don’t think so — otherwise, the Void wouldn’t be our enemy, would it?

That’s true, but you’re also complaining about a ‘what if’ scenario — something that is no longer the case — and the same logic would apply to the Worgen

How? A lot of their feral aesthetic was toned down for Vanilla.

Well the implication is that when the player (Spriest, Warlock, DH, Death Knight) does it it’s okay, Velves are a player race.

They could have had the same if they let the Night Elves stay fierce and xenophobic.

Or if the worgen/void elves still went crazy from time to time.

They keep writing opportunities for edge into the Alliance and then neutering them.

The Alliance is sort of packed with former villains from Dark Iron and Worgen to man’ari eredar. Void elves are more than a little suspect, too.

Kind of a hive of scum and villainy these days.

I understood that reference.

It was a price they paid for being the center of the plot. It didn’t have to be that way. But the same mindset leads to both.

Strange that they never produce any scum or villains, though…

We make sure that their fingers aren’t crossed when they say sorry.

Well, stop doing that!

100% agreed with the title. Will read the rest later. Just wanted to say Dark Iron Dwarves are one of my favorite aspects of the Alliance and I REALLY wish they retained at least a bit of their edge. The Alliance needs semi-villainous sub-factions fighting against the heroic majority to keep it nuanced and interesting.

Really is sad what blizz did with the races. Night Elves were so much better in WC3.

I’m praying they keep Man’ari as canonically only on Argus.

Yeah but it makes sense their xenophobia is kind of dulled considering they had to form an alliance with the Humans (and other races). As for their fierceness I don’t know if I’d say its been curtailed beyond nerfing them power wise. In lore do we have them pulling their punches with Horde for moral reasons or because they’re not as canonically strong and skilled in WoW as they were in WC3?

There’s a handful roaming Azeroth as per the Draenei heritage quest.

Horrible news. Velen really is the absolute worst lmao.

It’s not horrible news. Blizz had to justify the playable Man’ari somehow and that was the perfect way to do it

I mean they were an incredibly stupid idea to begin with I was hoping they’d be gameplay only and basically not canon like murloc onesies.

Velen once more proves himself to be the absolute worst.
