All Private Auras Need a Dedicated Frame and Audio Cue

Progressed Heroic Echo of Neltharian this evening.

Some context: There are two mechanics that target players and are coded as “private auras,” meaning that addons like WeakAuras / DBM / BigWigs are not allowed to see them.

There is a small arrow over your head when you have the mechanic. But I found it pretty difficult to notice–I’m really used to audio cues for stuff like this, and the icons blend in with spell effects.

Auras like this should have distinct sound effects that play for the person that has the debuff. In addition, I would like to put the debuff icon and timer smack in the middle of my character so I can’t possibly miss it, but there isn’t a separate frame for private auras in the base UI. So I would need to put all debuffs (including ones like Sated) on my character too.

If we’re going to have auras that addons can’t engage with, the default UI should make these much clearer and should support a fully independent frame to show them to offer some level of customization for how we see this information.

I think this should be a reasonably high priority if this type of thing is going to be used going forward.

That was on purpose so that addons couldn’t track them the way you want them to be. If they’re added in to be tracked, then they aren’t hidden any longer and could be accessed by addons, which is counter to why they did this.

No, you’re misunderstanding what I’m asking for. I explained that just for context, since not everyone knows what a Private Aura is.

I am not asking for them to make them accessible to addons. I want the stock UI to have a Buff frame, Debuff frame, and Private aura frame, so I can move it separately in edit mode.

I also think that the game should make it more obvious by default that you have a debuff, even if you’re running base UI, by adding a built in audio cue for them.

Neither of those things would undermine the purpose of Private Auras.

I didn’t misunderstand. Addons can access all frames. So my point was that if they make it a separate frame, there’s a chance that addons could access it, which defeats the purpose. It would have to have entirely different coding to be a frame that addons couldn’t access and that may be too much work to separate all of it.

I think audio cues are good. I do have my debuffs moved to the middle of my screen, very large, using the default UI. Audio cues are a good accessibility option.

The frame shouldn’t matter if the aura is coded to not be visible to addons.

I’m just looking for a way to physically move them separate from regular debuffs that are handled by addons (so I can disable the stock ones for that frame).

I have no doubt whatsoever that they could drop those into a separate frame and still keep them invisible to addons.
