I logged in recently after a 2-year break, and 90% of my characters don’t look the same anymore. Some look wildly different, some look vaguely the same, and many have gone bald.
The characters I care about, appearance-wise, were made after the initial graphics & design update ~5 years ago, so it isn’t because of that. A lot of them look like they were reset to the first of each customization category, with only about 5 of ~40 (many are old old) not getting changes in any way.
Only the characters with the Demon Hunter, Death Knight, and Evoker classes stayed perfectly the same, but the rest were changed at least a little bit.
The only reason I know that they were changed after so long is because I have screenshots from 3 years ago of many characters and a very good memory of what my main toons looked like.
Is this a bug, or was there another appearance update that I missed???
Maybe a update I notice many race got a lot of hair options as well as eye colors and other tweaks such as these , so if your old look fell on those old numbers perhaps got replace with the new. Also I don’t know if this helps but you can change the sex of your toon now at the barber shop at top of screen is Gender buttton(body1-2).
As it turns out, it was neither a bug nor an update. Simply put, my computer is an old and dumb machine that needs a couple tries to get things right, and relogging on WoW a few times fixed the problem (somehow).

I feel for you. I remember when they changed the hair after vanilla. My Gnome used to have a very unique appearance exactly how i wanted. After they changed the hair to the current method of rendering he looked like a pervert. I had to completely change his features.
