Alienware Ultrawide 38" Monitor

Hello -
I got a New Alienware Ultrawide 38" Monitor with a rez of 3840x1600. Ever since then my frames are horrible at 30fps or lower. Loading screens are 6fps - yes, under 10 fps.
I think my video card might be struggling to push those pixels?
Here are the Specs of my Current Alien Ware Machine:

Device name DESKTOP-52V6CNB
Processor Intel(R) Core™ i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz 3.19 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable)
Video Card: NVIDIA GTX 1070

My Question is can I just upgrade my Video Card? OR will I need other items - such as New Power Supply, etc…

Should I just get a New PC? The prices from the shortage are insane!

What Current NVIDA card will push my Monitor playing WoW? 3050? 3060? 3070? 3080?!

Thanks again for your time

Try turning on Freesync/Gsync if it has that option, I had huge frame loss with my 35in UW but turned Freesync on and it fixed my issue when setting it up.

Edit: I have the LG 35in 3440x1440 along with an asus 27in 2560x1440 running on a GTX 1080 / 8700k and had the same 30 fps 6 fps loading screen issue without freesync on and now I sail along at 100+ FPS anywhere without dropping/stuttering.

Hey I got the same monitor. I run dual 2080 TI’s. I tried plugging it into my old computer while my current one got maintenance, it had a 1060 in there and could barely function? Idk, I’m thinking it might be the graphics card.

Dude you got an overpriced dell! Alienware mean nothing these days.

Had just landed a 3090ti today wasn’t cheap but now I gotta get a new power supply and other stuff building my own power rig.

It’s likely the pretty large jump in resolution you just did, assuming you came from regular 1080p, you’re pushing a resolution that’s past 1440p and almost at 4k. Your CPU seems decent but your GPU might struggle trying to push an almost 4k resolution.

It means 17% discount for Dell employees (or it did when Dell bought them out)

Alienware is like when someone just puts a brand name on salt.

Generic salt is just still the same salt.

You can build the same PCs for almost half the price, normally.

I don’t think a 1070 is designed for that resolution. You should probably drop the resolution.
Out of curiosity, what were you playing on prior to this monitor?

I’d recommend going to https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ and putting your PC parts in and that should help you figure out where you can expand.

1070 should be able to handle 4K. (I have a 970 – it can handle it in some game settings.) So it’s probably in the software.

Older HDMI cables cannot handle 4K bandwidth, so it’s important to use HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1. If you use DisplayPort, then you’re fine. (I dont think any 1070 GPU has USB-C.)

I believe if the bandwidth was too low for the resolution, they wouldn’t be getting any signal at all, not lower framerate.

It’s the GPU. 100%

Yeah, this is true. It’s more signal, but im not sure if hardware these days can compensate for it. (Similar to thermal throttling, but downscaling for compat.)

I would get A RTX 3080 for sure. for that Monitor.

That is very true custom made pc is the way to go and alot cheaper and better deals.

maybe try running the game in windowed mode or playing with the game settings. or windows scaling.

My monitors different so I would STRONGLY encourage reading the pdf or manual for your specific type. Mine was trash too out of the box but worked flawlessly after doing the following; I have a Samsung G7 faker edition.

I had to update the firmware of the monitor with a USB flash drive, There was one specific USB slot to be used for this task. download the EXACT firmware for my make & model, be careful here you can brick your stuff & don’t want any power outages or unexpected shutdowns.

After I did this there were settings in the monitor control panel to update it & I chose the flash drive. I also had to use rufus to make it executable. There was also a plethora of G-card settings, other monitor settings & even some windows settings to get everything tweaked perfect.
Edit: windows 11. I always custom build & do my own trouble-shooting.

Yes. The 2000 and 3000 series video cards use the same PCI slot.

Back in 2010 or so when Dell bought Alienware, a lot of us wanted to buy new systems with our annual bonus so a friend and I tried a test. I was going to order a prebuilt Alienware (with our discount) and he was going to order a bunch of separate parts.

We paid about the same price for our systems.
Mine came in a box and had a 3 year onsite next business day warranty.
He got a bunch of parts but got the fun of putting his together.

His mobo was DOA. Yes he got a warranty (so don’t argue how you do get a warranty) but the RMA process was to buy another motherboard, have it shipped to him, then ship the DOA one back they would refund his credit card. If the same thing happened to mine, after a call I’d have a tech (or just part if I wanted it) on site the NBD with no charges. Say what you want but that kind of warranty is incredible.

In the end if was a fun experiment and finally got me as someone in their 40s to finally start giving pre-built’s a shot.

I gave that system to a friend for their kid a few years ago and last I checked it was still going strong

I’d update your driver first. Also I don’t know if your desktop is a premade and came with bloatware, but if so I’d reformat and start over.

This is getting a bit dated, but I think it should still be fine. Are you running at least a current version of Windows 10? Using an obsolete OS can kill your game FPS just as bad as obsolete hardware.
