Alert about OS support ending for Midnight despite being on Win 11

I received an alert with the following message when starting Wow:

Important Notice: The upcoming release of World of Warcraft: Midnight will require Windows 10 or later to run. Your current version of Windows will not be supported and will be incompatible with the new expansion.

I’m currently on Windows 11, so I suspect I received this in error. Was surprising to see nonetheless.

I did as well it said needs Windows 10 or higher and i have the latest windows 10

Got the same error on windows 11.

I’ve also received this error. I’m running on the latest version of Windows 10. I hope it’s not a sign there is something else with my computer that is incompatible.

I can’t currently find it, but there was a wow developer that posted that it was unintentional that Win 10/11 users got this message. It was intended for those playing on Win7, Win8 and Win 8.1 OS versions, and was to appear every 10 days.

I originally posted a reply here, but I can repost the info here as well:

Our current working theory is that there must be a Windows 8 compatibility setting being applied to WoW by the registry.

If anyone feels comfortable checking and modifying the registry, check
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
for any entries talking about Wow.exe and delete them.
I’m guessing there’s some registry keys applying WIN8RTM to Wow.exe

If anyone can confirm or deny this theory, it would be helpful info to have. If that is what’s going on, I can try to add code to detect if there is a Windows 8 compatibility mode being applied to WoW that is causing Windows to lie to WoW about what OS we’re running on.

Thanks for the info, at least we know now. As for going into my comp and changing things, I am afraid I might blow up my comp, lol.

On the flip side, as soon as Blizzard cough’s up the $200 upgrade from win7 to win10, I’ll resubscibe. And I really don’t want to hear about any security issues. I’d still be using XP if it weren’t for corporate greed.

The patch that went out today
Should fix the pop-ups that say,
“Your hardware’s no good.”
It misunderstood
Windows was already okay.
