Alchemy bleg: Do-and-Don’t advice from the ‘experienced,’ please!

My priestess will be going into Alchemy as she always has done (firm decision) but hasn’t taken the specialization plunge yet as it seemed rather high-risk for ‘buyers remorse’ when it comes to spending the knowledge points. Reading the complaints in this forum makes me glad I’ve waited; it seems that that some actionable pieces of advice would be:

  • Avoid or delay Alchemical Theory.
  • Build Phial or Potion specialization but one at a time, not together.
  • Avoid placing points in ‘Experimentation’ options as they become redundant once all potions are learned; they only speed up the discovery process anyway.

So for those experienced/disillusioned in working DF alchemy how would you add to, remove from, or otherwise edit the above list? My personal goal isn’t gold-making but accessing the most useful potions like Spectral Flask of Power and Shadowcore Oil in SL (some might find those goals to be one-and-the-same).

So you understand that the phial experimentation capstone (20/20) is huge . You not only get advanced experimentation (2 hour cooldown if you fail, which is very rare at this point) BUT more importantly, you get more phials created at higher quality.

So basically even if you discovered all the recipes, you get 3* phials created that you can sell at very good gold return, as the mats to experiment are very cheap.

In addition, what is also huge if you have another crafter profession is the 4 hour inspiration buff you get when you experiment.

Now if making gold (or breaking even) with alchemy is not a priority, then fine you are correct. If you don’t have another crafting profession, you are correct.

you kind of have to, or you will get the recipes by the end of the raid tier. the 4h CD is pretty brutal. The only people who could avoid this were the ones exploiting the CD reset on the first few days.

Experimentation is mediocre at mid profession level, but once you have ALL alchemy maxed (or don’t need mettle anymore) it becomes good again.

5 mettle for a couple rank 3 phials is good gold exchange rate. The problem is we need a lot of mettle right now to get our profession equipment and fancy gear crafts so we can’t afford to waste it on phials.

The rest, yeah. totally. Focus on phials or potions, don’t spread the points. Once you finish your favorite, move on to theory… only then, go back to the spec you missed.

I can make rank 2 phials, and rank 3 with inspiration procs. It’s the only thing that makes gold for me atm.

I have exactly 300 skill when making phials, and exactly 450 skill on inspiration (which is the minimum for rank 3 phials)
