The Problem and The Effects:
some addons can do automatic buying in the AH. The players using this feature are exploiting other players and effectively scamming them out of their time. This can only happen for so long before it’s going to affect how many people are farming. Or worse, if allowed to continue, eventually will push the price of mats into the ground and kill actual farming.
What the scam is:
they post reagents low and hope someone else posts after them, because whatever add-on you use, automatically makes you undercut (or rather ‘top-post’, in most cases) whatever is lowest.
Why its working:
this is effective because, price setting happens instantly and automatically as you’re setting up your sale. most people don’t check because they are always posting at whatever the market value currently is. or by looking at what is currently listed. but this can change in the middle of you posting your items. Whether or not that changes your current price is dependent on the add-on you’re using.
Simplest Fix
Disable addons ability to buy auctions automatically.
Best Fix
Ban the accounts involved. Clear market manipulation and gotta be again the social contract. kek.
When you post things you should be paying attention, add-on or no add-on. If you see someone pricing something really low to try and “scam” others, buy it up and repost it for the correct value if you think someone would actually want it.
AH add-ons are great, and I honestly can’t see how its any easier to scam someone with one then it would be without one, in fact many will warn you if your buying multiple items of large price jumps, so in many ways actually protect you from people who are trying to scam you, personally I find it much easier to lose using Blizzards AI, which has horrible sorting.
Either way, when you’re buying/selling on the AH, know the prices, and pay attention. If you blindly accept automation then you can’t really blame the scammers.
Seriously, if you’re not taking the extra few seconds to double check the price you post at, you’re shooting yourself in the foot. It’s not a scam, you’re just not paying attention.
